Urine test and UTI

Hi!

Quick question and I'll be sure to ask me doctor at my next appt...but everytime I go to my OB, I give a urine sample. I'm not 100 percent sure what they test for, but read that its for proteins, etc. Is a UTI included in those tests normally?

I don't believe I have a UTI :none of the symptoms: and urinate a lot as is it so if that WERE my symptom I wouldn't know...just curious!

Thanks for reading!

Re: Urine test and UTI

  • They check for proteins and sugars. If you are concerned that can run a full urinalysis to check for infection.

They check for a "silent" bladder infection as well. You don't have to show symptoms for a bladder infection. .. apparently that's common in pregnancy.

     this.

Can't figure out the signature thing, so here's the short, short version.....first daughter born on November 10, 2013. She was conceived through the magic of IVF after 2+ years of TTC.

This.  I actually had a UTI and didn't know - I'm on antibiotics now.  After looking online (thanks Dr. Google!) it's important to catch UTIs in pregnancy - especially later on.

    Me: 30, DH: 40
TTC since January 2012HSG & Bloodwork: Normal, SA: NormalDx: Unexplained Infertility 50mg Clomid + TI = BFN (three cycles)

  • Thanks ladies for your insight! I'll be asking my OB about what exactly the look for in the urine tests each appt...my colleague of mine who is also pregnant had a UTI early on in her pregnancy and it got me thinking...

Ditto on this. I apparently had a UTI and never knew it. The doctor now has me on penicillin to get rid of it.
  • I work in a micro lab and we do the culture part...the analysis is done by another part of the lab and brings up indicators on if it should be cultured or not.  They can see if there's bacteria and signs of infection present in the anlysis, however until a culture is run you can't tell what kind of bacteria it is (which determines what type of antibiotic you need) or if it may have been contamination (lots of bacteria normally live down there so if you didn't wipe enough or do a perfect midstream clean catch you can get contamination).  However, unless you produced a very tiny amount of urine, they should've been able to do a culture off the same sample...though the sample may have already dumped by the time the doctor decided they wanted to add it on.  Usually they will do an analysis with culture if indicated...sounds like they got mixed up and ordered an analysis only.
