Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Recommended Ounces

Our Pedi recommended we feed LO the amount of ounces in half her body weight.  If she weighs 10 lbs she should be eating 5 ounces per feeding.  Has anyone else heard of this?  It seems like a lot, especially knowing she's going to be steadily gaining.  I hope I can keep up!  (I am pumping and BFing)

Most breastfed babies don't take more than 5 oz. per feeding for the first 6 months. I think the ped is crazy. ...

It may be different with formula though

  • That is a lot for such a young baby. My LO is just now eating 5 oz when bottle fed. I have always been told for every pound your child weighs, it's 2 oz. So if your child is 8 pounds, they should be drinking around 16 oz split into 8-10 feedings. Definitely give or take some oz. I would say typical newborn should eat around 18-24 oz in a day.

um yeah. That's a LOT if you are talking about breast milk. My three week old generally drinks 2.5-3 oz when taking a bottle.

  • That's a lot. DS2 is 7 weeks old and when he takes BM in a bottle, it's just 3 oz. DS1 didn't start taking 5 oz. till he was about 5 months old (and that was also the most he ever took, it never went up).

Thanks for the responses!  Guess I will have to clarify! :)  She doesn't seem to have a problem taking down 4.5 ounces at almost 7 weeks but I don't want to overfeed her either..
