Toys

Hey everybody,

Got a question for you. Hannah is 15 weeks now. Recently she reached for the dangly toy hanging from her carseat. So we went out and bought her some teething and easy to grasp toys. (teething toys cuz she chews on her hands like crazy!)

She is SO not interested in the toys we bought her lol. At what age did you LO's start chewing on toys? She holds them for like 15 seconds and then drops them. She is way more interested in chewing her hands and our fingers.

E has been in the "put all the things in the mouth" stage for a while now. Since maybe 5 or 6 months and still going strong. At Hannah's age, E was super into her baby Einstein radio. She loved to push the button and hear the music and see the lights.

  • I believe DS started grabbing toys at 4 months but it was more like an accident. The first toy he really played with was the O-ball rattle and we still have it. So it was a good investment.

I agree around 5 or 6 months was when everything started going in the mouth and didn't stop until like well over a year old ;)

Do you have one of those play mats?  Both of my kids were obsessed with laying on ours.  They loved to look up and grab at the dangling toys and watch the music and light show thing that was strapped to the side of it while doing tummy time and stuff.  It also came with a mirror and a whale pillow and a few other things ... we used it for quite awhile :)

Hmm, I don't have any other type of toys for her. Do you think it's important? She just seems so content to cuddle all day. I guess I'm worried I'm not doing enough with her. She just doesn't seem interested in the toys we got her, BUT I haven't tried any electronic toys at all.

I do have one, it's just not set up. We don't have whole lot of space, and we have a dog :p. BUT maybe it's time to put it up.

  • J has just started getting into toys. But really she will play with anything in her hands. I've noticed the Lama.ze moose is a favorite because there is lots of sensory stuff, but antlers for chewing. She likes her playmat, but I don't have many electric toys. She is also very content to cuddle and eat her hands or my fingers.

I think the cause and effect, button makes music, was a great motivator for her to learn. But it doesn't need to be an electronic toy for that. E also really loved books at that age. She still does, they are her favorite thing. She loves turning pages.

This. They also love the Winkel. The playmat and Lamaze firefly, peacock, and moose were among their first favorites. Sassy products were also great in the beginning. They didn't really get into teething toys until 5 or so months and they are now very excited about light up toys, touch and feel books, blocks, rings, cups, and chewy things now. One of my boys appears to be in an xrated relationship with Sophie the Giraffe. They really go after her!

    THIS!

M started mouthing toys around 3 months (around Hannah's age now) when he was able to bring them to his mouth awkwardly using clenched fists.  His favorite by far was Mortimer the Moose, but I hear most other Lamaze toys are popular too (eg, captain calamari, the dragonfly etc).

Mortimer was M's favorite for about 2 months.  Now he much prefers Sophie the giraffe - his dexterity is better so he can maneuver Sophie's legs into his mouth.  He only has been able to do that since around 5'ish months.

Ditto what others said, definitely set up the play mat!  We have the FP Rainforest gym and I actually had it out since M was 2 weeks old.  Back then he was just flailing his arms and hitting the toys by accident.  But throughout the first 6 months, I was able to watch him getting more and more engaged with the gym, learning & figuring out how to play the toys as he gets older.  Now at 6 months, he's pretty much outgrew the gym so I'm packing it up.
