need sock suggestions for KAFO braces-child with OI

My son will be wearing KAFO braces on both legs in the next week.  He is 22 months old. Does anyone have suggestions as to what is a good brand of sock to use with the braces?

  • I like the SmartKnit socks. You can find tall socks at Children's Place, Gap, Target, etc. but DS2 has sweaty feet and those socks are soaked by the time his AFOs come off. I find the SmartKnit socks aren't as wet and help to keep the sweat off his feet.  The SmartKnit socks are more expensive then a typical store brand sock, but the extra price is worth it to me to not be grossed out every time I have to take his socks off.

  • my son had an AFO of which he used the smartknit and I thought they were a little thick so i was hoping to find something thinner for the summer but would still control the sweatty feet (which my little one has) I think the smartknits are the only ones out there and I agree completely...they're worth the extra $$$.  Thanks!!

  • Check a medical supply company.  A couple years ago I got compression socks for a long flight when I was pg and I think I remember them having children's socks on there too.  For now, my DD, who wears AFO's while in her stander, we pull her socks up high.  They're hanes brand, and go up to her knees.

I look at it this way. The feet are surrounded by plastic. They are going to be hot and sweaty if you have a thick or thin sock on.  I also feel that thinner socks don't or won't necessarily last as long.  I do plan on using the SmartKnit socks this summer but I also don't feel they are that thick (although compared to say the socks at The Children's Place they are!).  DS2 is seeing the orthopedist who did his braces today and I know he had a different brand that he picked up at a trade show. He gave them to someone to try out and he told me they reported that that brand seemed hotter (kept the feet hotter) then the SmartKnit brand. I believe they were thinner then the SmartKnit. If I remember, I'll ask him for the brand name and will post it for you to look into. FTR, I am interested in other brands too...just in case I do switch!
