Cloth Diapering

killing yeast on dipes

I posted earlier about using nystatin with my cd's.  In the responses I learned I need to kill the yeast on my dipes too (ped didn't say anything!  guess he's not familiar with cd's).  Anyway, do I need to do my covers and wipes too?  I'm guessing anything that touched his bottom is fair game.  I've read that bleach is the best way to kill the yeast, but all my covers (thirsties, rumparooz, and swaddlebees) say no bleach!  I also read that TTO in the laundry can kill the yeast.  My thought was to do a cycle with TTO and a hot dry.  Then, remove my covers and run another cycle with just wipes and prefolds with bleach.  Think this will do the trick?  What do you suggest?

Sounds like a good plan to me. But you might consider using grapefruit seed extract, GSE, in addition to TTO. The TTO kills the yeast and the GSE kills the spores.

  • If you are worried about the warranty then don't use bleach, but if you are worried about ruining your dipes, an occasional bleach is not going to hurt them. Repeated use over the long term isn't great for the elastic, but I've bleached all those brands once or twice with no issues.

Be sure you use regular, good old chlorine bleach, too. Oxygen bleach doesn't kill the yeast.

  • Whenever we've dealt with yeast (thank you antibiotics!) we've done a warm prewash with tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract (you can also use one or the other) followed by a hot wash with 1/4 cup of bleach. I've bleached everything from prefolds to my fitteds with no issue. I figure I've voided the warranty on most of them by either washing on hot, or using diaper rash cream, so what's a little bleach once a blue moon?

  • I don't give a rip about the warranty, I was just afraid the bleach would harm them somehow.  Thanks for the info.  Bleach, tto and gse it is.  Watch out yeast, here I come!
