Our (Good) MRI Experience
I?m mainly a lurker, but trying to be more active. It was really helpful to read about other experiences with getting a MRI, so I thought I?d post ours. DS is 2 and had a MRI a few weeks ago. He has Autism and a large head, he is a big kid and has always been in the 90th percentile for height and weight, his head size has been off the charts since 6 months old and his doctor has been pushing to get a MRI since then. We put it off until he was a little older since we both have large heads and figured it ran in the family.
We got the first appointment of the day at 8AM, they said to be there 30 minutes early, but there really was no point. He couldn?t eat past midnight and was allowed to have clear liquids until 2 hours before. That was the hardest part of the day, he gets very angry when you don?t give him what he wants. Only one of us was allowed to go in the MRI room while they put the gas mask on him, I went in and made sure he could see me and talked to him while he cried into the mask. It didn?t take long, maybe 1-2 minutes and he was out. I wasn?t allowed to stay during the MRI and left the room crying after watching him go under. They waited until he was out to put the IV in.
Also, they let us dress him. He wore soft PJs, no metal, and warm socks. I had a change of clothes for all of us in case he threw up. Light reading for my husband and me. I also brought food for us while he was getting his scan. I didn?t want him to see us eating in front of him and get mad that we weren?t sharing.
They were only scanning his brain and it took 1 hour, they didn?t let me see him for an additional 45 minutes because he was still asleep. They finally let me in and he slept for another 30 minutes, we tried waking him and he briefly woke up but decided he would rather stay asleep. They let us take him home and he woke up as soon as we got in the car. I was expecting him to be upset and kick and scream, but he didn?t. They said to wait until he was fully awake before giving him anything to drink. He was fine by the time we got home and I had a new toy waiting for him. He was a happy kid the rest of the day.
It took a week to get the results, which are normal!! I hope this helps someone get ready for their MRI.
