SAHMs

For those of you who are staying at home, do you have any plan for how long you'll be doing it?

DH doesn't make that much money- enough for us to live on but nothing extra to really add to our savings.  It sucks not having extra, but I know that I'll eventually go back to work and it's worth it to budget right now so I can stay home with DD. Then when I do go back, we still plan on sticking to the same budget and banking my paycheck for retirement and paying off the mortgage.

I'm working the month of July for the summer school program at the school I previously subbed at. I'm trying to keep my foot in the door there. I really want one of the nurses there to retire (2 are older but I don't know what their plans are and would never ask) and I would be first on the list for a FT position since I subbed.

Has anyone else thought about going back? Or are you just planning on SAH for awhile longer?

  • My goal is to never go back to work! My DH makes enough to support our family and he works long crazy hours, so me SAH works really well for our family.

This. Besides the crazy hours. I might think about it once kids are in school but until then we like it the way it is.

  • Well right now I SAH and do my Etsy shop.  DH makes enough to support us, so the idea was we don't need any income from me right now....but that's not long term.  We want my income again at some point.  Soooo....once we have (hopefully!) 2 school aged kids I will have to see how my Etsy is doing.  My hope is that in a number of years as I can devote more and more time to it I will make a part time income with it.  However, if by that point it's not doing well enough to bring in some money, then I'll have to reevaluate and get a part time job.  I want to be home when my kids get home from school at least 3 out of 5 days a week....so I won't ever go back full time.

I worked from home, so told my clients I'd be off for a year. I'm doing v small projects now, when LO naps (har). Not sure what our plans will be after a year - I'd like to do more work, DH is more confident about his salary supporting us than I am, so we'll see.

  • My origional plan was to stay home a year but we have managed so much better than I thought we would that the plan has kind of morphed into me staying out indefinitely. Unless, I lose my marbles, we are going to try for 2 years.

If I do go back to work, it will be mainly for something that I really really enjoy doing. Dh makes more than enough for us to live on/save money/etc....I was thinking about looking for something next year, but then I figure I'll probably wanto to start TTC #2 around that time, so I would be getting pregnant shortly after starting a new job. Is it the worst thing, no, but seems kind of awkward/silly...we'll see though. I'm not putting any pressure on myself to look for something full time. I do work a few hours a week at my previous job seeing some clients on a per diem basis and right now that's enough work for me.

  • My plan was to SAH for at least 6 months and then start working PT from home for DH's business.  We aren't quite there yet, but I'll start this summer.  I have been doing a few projects here and there.  I'd like to be on a set schedule soon. I hope that I can always work from home going forward and just PT.  Like PP have mentioned, my DH works a lot of hours so it really works to have me home most of the time.
