I have an Ergo Sport from last time and DD wasn't a huge fan when she was tiny even with the insert (that I borrowed).  I plan on getting a Baby K'tan for the first months.  I have friends that swear by them.  they look like a Moby, but already sewn together so easy to put on and off.

It is not good for baby's hips to be facing outward, so just avoid carriers that do this.  And if you can borrow a few different ones to try out ahead of time, that would be ideal.

  • I used a Moby for the first 5/6 months and an Ergo Sport (with the infant insert).  I still use the Ergo now occasionally at 16 months.

  • I used the moby for the first few months and a mei tei later when she was too heavy for a front carry and I would put her on my back. Loved it.

  • We did a Bjorn from 0 - 4 months and an Ego from 4 months on. I hated the Bjorn, so if I have another kid, I want to do a Moby wrap or K'tan in the early newborn days and then an Ergo from 3/4 months on.

  • I think a moby wrap is a great starter wrap. You can usually get them for about 20 used, so it's not a huge investment. Or if you are having a summer baby I would definitely
consider a gauze wrap, like bali breeze, if you think you will like wrapping. Ellaroo wrap is another lightweight option.
  • Thanks for the responses. This is my first and I plan to have 3 to 4 children, so it'll def get its use, so cost isn't a huge factor since with quality the cost goes up.

I'm a FTM but I found this website helpful for comparing

  • Personally, I'm a fan of the Moby for when they're tiny, then the Beco Gemini for older babies. Once they start walking places and wanting up and down and up and down and up and down and etc., I start to favor a ring sling for ease of quick in out.

Basically, I'd be prepared for your preferences to change over time. I started with just the Moby, then as he got bigger tried new things based on research/recommendations.

  • I hated the Moby. It took a long time for me to learn to use it, and by then DD2 was almost too heavy to use it comfortably. She also hated it because she wasn't high enough to see out. I gave it to a friend, and she and her baby loved it.

I bought our Ergo when DD2 was about 6 months and really liked it for that age and up. I think it would work best for an older baby.

I have a ring sling now and love it for DD3. It's really easy to use, and I've been able to breastfeed in it as well. I think it will be nice to do a quick hip carry when DD3 is older.
