Tips to get LO to take the bottle?

I'm beginning to wean LO to formula, slowly, before I go back to work in June.  She will take bottles from my mom and MIL but so far DH hasn't been able to get her to take one from him.  She definitely won't take one from me but I'm pretty sure she smells my milk or is just so used to me BFing. Do I just have to work through a fussy spell the first few times I give her a bottle or is there an easier way to transition?  At least she'll take the bottle from the 2 people who will be her caregivers when I go back to work.

Re: Tips to get LO to take the bottle?

  • We bought Playtex Nurser bottles for our baby - they have a slower flowing nipple, which mimics the flow that the baby gets at the breast. I found that some of the other bottles were flowing too fast. Maybe it's just inexperience with bottle feeding, but I think these slower nipples helped us to bottle feed without lots of fussing.

  • I've been trying to get my LO to take a bottle of pumped breastmilk with no luck.  We've tried different bottles, different nipples, faster flow nipples, slower flow nipples with no success.  She outright refuses the bottle, no matter who is giving it.  I'm glad your LO is taking a bottle from the grandmas.  I wish I had advice for you but I'll be watching this thread to see if anyone else has advice!

  • I would try when she isn't super hungry. Maybe try nursing one side then trying the bottle. Since she has something in her belly she should be calmer. Good luck.
  • Also make sure the formula is the right temperature. She might like it a little warmer or a little cooler.

This is me too.  DD#1 was the exact same way and never took a bottle (finally took a sippy cup around 9 months) so I don't have much hope for this LO either...

All of this applies to me as well! We've tried everything under the sun with no luck so far. I'd be happy if LO took bottle from anyone, really.  I'm just watching to see if someone is going to mention something that I haven't seen/tried that I could try.

  • One thought, try feeding using medicine drop or a spoon just to get baby familiarized with formula then use bottle to feed. It's harder but worth a shot.
