Feeding

My daughter is 13 days old and is eating all the time! She is cluster feeding for the most part. I am noticing that she is spitting up more and more. How do you know the difference between over eating and reflux? She doesn't projectile vomit but, she does spit up quite a bit. She also seems to choke sometimes when feeding and I have to sit her right up.

Re: Feeding

  • Is she burping good? I find that DD spits up a lot more when she doesn't get a good burp out.

  • a lot of babies have some form of mild reflux. If your LO is choking, there could be a number of things. Reflux, having some issues swallowing, too fast of a bottle nipple....

i agree with PP with the burp.  Try and get a good burp out of her; she could be refluxing due to gas in her tummy.  When my LO chugs a bottle and won't burp, she'll spit up, which she NEVER does (she's a silent refluxer)

  • Spitting up doesn't necessarily mean overeating or reflux. They just have really immature digestive systems, so spitting up is totally normal. There could be a little milk on top of a gas bubble that they burp out and the milk comes up, etc. If she is choking when you're feeding (do you mean BF?) then you might have an overactive letdown. Try feeding her upright like you are, or just express a little into a towel or something before feeding her. If she spits up a lot and doesn't gain weight, is really fussy when eating, etc. then it could be reflux.
  • The choking while eating sounds like oversupply to me. I had it with all 3 of my LOs. Eventually your body regulates and it stops. In the mean time, try keeping LO's head higher than her belly when she feeds. If necessary, pull her off and catch the letdown in a rag (or use a nursing pad and some compression, which is what I do). The spitting up is a side-effect of oversupply as well, especially if she's not burping well.

With my LOs, they're gulping so fast to keep up with the forceful letdown/oversupply that they swallow more air than normal, so they desperately need to be burped well and will still spit-up frequently. They also have gas issues, despite all the things i do to help. It's just something to get through. Usually by 3 months or so, things regulate. It also helps that their digestive tracts mature enough to help. Letdown for me is so forceful that it arcs out in a stream from some ducts about 4-5 inches during the strongest part (have had a few experiences in the shower when just washing triggers letdown, fun times)

  • She does usually get a good burp but, sometimes doesn't. I am trying to have her sit up more during feedings which is tricky seeing I am breastfeeding.
  • I think this is what is happening I have a ton of milk and she is guzzling it. She often has is it flowing out the side of her mouth while eating. Thank you for the info, makes me feel better.

I BF my 9 week old sitting up. There are 2 ways.  One, sit on couch and have her sit beside you facing the couch back, use your arm on that side to hug her close and slightly leaning towards you to reach your breast.  Hope that makes some sense.

The other way is to sit anywhere and have her sit on one leg facing you.  Put her so one of her legs is on each side of your thigh, she'll almost be standing since legs are so tiny.  Then holding her upright lean her towards your breast on the same side of the leg she is sitting on. Again, I hope that makes sense!
