easy napper at 8/9 weeks?? come in!

How long is your LO awake before you put him/her down for nap? It's such a struggle for us, and I'm starting to wonder if I'm just way off on timing. I haven't been able to determine his sleepy cues either, which also makes me think either I try too early and that's why he cries so much not ready so is angry, or I try too late is overtired. If I do get him down, he never makes the transition into the next sleep cycle so the naps are 45 minutes.

Please tell me your success with naps, thank you!

  • When my LO was the same age as yours it was 1 hr TOPS she was awake in between naps.  We did the EASY schedule - Eat, Activity (tummy time for example), Sleep, You time.  This worked out great for us and to this day my LO is a fantastic napper and sleeper I think partly due to the fact we followed EASY.  It helped teach her to sleep/nap.  Cues for my LO were yawning, fingers in mouth or just getting cranky.  If you're getting the point where they are cranky they are probably overtired then.  2 yawns and she was down for a nap.  If I didn't see any cues I still put her down at an hour.

  • Usually DD goes down around 1 1/2 to 2 hours after she's been up. She will usually start putting her hands in her face when she's getting tired. She's a good napper usually. Although we started daycare this week and she doesn't seem to be taking as long of naps there.

ETA: we do the EASY routine as well

  • DD is awake usually 1 to 1.5 hours between naps.  Same as PP she will put her hands to her face or pull at her ears.  If shes having trouble going down I put her in the bouncer and turn on the vibration.

  • The book we use for sleep (Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child) says that babies should not be awake for more than 2 hours at a time.  DS usually is sleepy between 90 minutes and an hour & 45 minutes.  His sleepy cues are yawning, rubbing his eyes, red/tired eyes, and fussiness in his favorite position.  At that point, I change him, swaddle him and rock him for a couple of minutes.  Most of the time, his eyes close almost immediately (which is such a gratifying feeling!) but sometimes they droop and pop back open for a little bit.

That being said, he also struggles to get past 30-40 minute naps sometimes.  Occasionally, I can rock him back to sleep but that's definitely consistent.  If I get him up at that point, it is usually an hour before he seems sleepy again.

Our DS is 9w3d and is this exactly.  We follow the same routine, and start after he's been awake for 90 minutes if he hasn't shown tired signs earlier.
