High-Risk Pregnancy

progesterone suppositories

This is my second pregnancy, i'm 19 weeks, and it was found yesterday that my cervix is short (only 1.5 cm) and the doctors decided to put me on progesterone suppositories to try and prevent preterm labor.. Has anyone used them and had a successful full term pregnancy?

Re: progesterone suppositories

  • progesterone supps do nothing this late in pregnancy except give you added progesterone, they should be giving you p17 shots and putting in a cerclage.

  • I highly doubt they would prescribe something that is known to be ineffective.

I've read some studies that have been done and from the results there seems to be no difference in the effectiveness of a suppository vs a shot.

  • hello i went on prodesterone suppositories at 21 weeks pregnant. My cervix was 2.5 and funneled. i am now almost 38 weeks pregant they worked for me... I was 31 weeks when i went off of it. My cervix stayed the same  and the funneling went away.Bedrest was also very helpful. Just do whatever your doctor says... And keep faith and stay off your feet. Its a long journey but worth it....
  • My cervix was 1.5 at 16 weeks. I got a cerclage the day after they discovered my short cervix. I am also on 17p injections. I'm not sure what the difference is between the supp and the injection. I do think the injection has made a huge difference for me. I have also been on bedrest since 16 weeks and ill be 25 weeks on Saturday.. I would ask you doc about a cerclage as 1.5 isn't much cervix left. Are you on bedrest?
  • I asked him if I should be limiting my activities but he told me I don't have to unless I feel cramping.  I have a 2 year old, so bed rest is difficult.  I'm trying to take it easy the best I can.

I was on suppositories starting at 24.5 weeks to help with a short cervix (2.5 cm) and preterm labor.  I was also on modified/strict bed rest.  I would seriously consider limiting your activities if you cervix is already that short at 19 weeks.  I agree with PP's that you should ask if a cerclage is an option in addition to suppositories.  I made it to 38 weeks with bed rest and the suppositories, but that wasn't without several trips to L&D in between for PTL.  Good luck.

  • Iim mobile so I'm not sure what it says in my ticker but I had a McD cerclage done at 21.6 when they found it to be at 1.67 cm. The next day and ever since its been around 2.67. I'm on progesterone suppositories and that's it. I'm preg with twins too. Docs basic idea is that it might not be PROVEN to work, but it's one of our only options to help right now. So with strict bedrest I've kept them in for 5 more weeks and praying for at least 8 more!! I have another check in 8 days and am anxiously awaiting 28 weeks! You can ask about cerclage, but I would not rely on it alone this late in pregnancy. You can do this!! I've read stories of women who had no measurable cervix make it to 38 weeks with no stitch. Keep holding on and take it as easy as possible for that little baby. I don't even sit up to eat usually. Eeek!

  • I'm in a similar boat.nbsp;Found out my cervix had shortened on Monday from 24mm a week ago to 9. and I'm about 1cm dilated.nbsp; Unfortunately I don't have enough tissue for a cerclage.Dr. says they can't give you the shots if you don't have history of PTL.nbsp; And while the suppositories aren't proven to help with multiples I have triplets they can't hurt and are worth trying.nbsp; Similar with bed rest.nbsp; He told me in the beginning I wouldn't go on bed rest because it's not proven to help, but we're doing everything we can to keep the babies in and growing!Trust your Dr...continue to read and get information that way you can ask informed questions. nbsp;GLnbsp;image nbsp;

Do you have your MD?  This response is not really very helpful and also not accurate.

OP, there is some literature (if I can find the article I read, I'll send it to you) about the efficacy of vaginal progesterone with short cervix.  The research is not completely conclusive, but does help sometimes.  And it never hurts.  As scary as it is, try to trust your providers.

I was put back on supps due to short cervix (I'm also on bed rest) and while cervixes don't tend to lengthen, I'm at least stable.

    Hang in there!!

Really? Where did you find this information?

Anyhow, my MFM actually prefers the supps to shots. I'm on the vaginal suppositories and they've definitely helped with the contractions. It's still too early in the game for me but I'm really hoping they do what they're supposed to do.

OP, in your case however, I'd request a cerclage. That is a really short cervix. And even if the doctor says you don't have to limit your activities, I'd do it just to be on the safe side.

  • I am on bedrest and progesterone suppositories since 24 weeks. I also have a pessary (flexible plastic ring inserted around cvx).  My Dr said cerclage was not an option for me due to twins and/or timing. I was not prescribed P17 shots and have had PTL before. I am at one of the best hospitals in the US and trust their judgement.

With my first pregnancy I was prescribed bedrest only from 28-37 weeks. I went into labor after one day off bedrest. For me, it worked.

  • Thanks ladies.. My doc did give me an article that did show results from multiple studies where women with similar measurements as mine showed the greatest benefit with the use of suppositories and not so much with the shots.  I didn't ask but from reading other posts by women in my situation, I hear it's dangerous to have a cerclage done when your cervix is this short.  There is a chance of membrane rupture?  I go back on the 22nd for another ultrasound to remeasure my cervix and to monitor baby (I also have a large growth on my placenta so they want to make sure its not taking nutrients from baby). If things seem to be getting worse, I'm sure they will want to try something else.  Keeping my fingers crossed that the progesterone helps!!

I am currently 15 weeks, 16 weeks tomorrow.  A couple weeks ago was my first time hearing of progesterone usage during pregnancy.  I am anxious to ask my doc about the suppositories vs the shot.  I am scheduled to start weekly injections later this week.  I have experienced contractions since 2-3 months and about the same with two previous pregnancies.  I am very interested to see the significant difference with this extra precaution, being that with my previous two pregnancies this was not even offered (both pregnancies ended well).  From all of the other posts I feel good that everything will be great.  Good luck to everyone!!
