Milk from pump

I have been misguided and have been pumping milk with pump and parts cleansed with only hot tab water. They have never been steamed or with soapy water. I've stored about 20 oz in freezer. My question is should I dump these milk or use if use what is the risks that I am exposing my baby? Thank you for your help.

Re: Milk from pump

  • My doctor said that sterilizing was unnecessary, especially if you have a dishwasher.  I have been using hot soapy water to clean it, but do sterilize once at night

  • That depends. Were you just quickly rinsing, or were you rubbing them under the hot water and rinsing well? If so I would mark those bags of milk and when you defrost them smell and taste them. If they seem ok I'd use them.

You really don't have to sterilize everything after every use, as PP said the dishwasher is fine.

But ultimately only you know how well you cleaned the pump parts, so you have to do what makes you comfortable.

  • I am paranoid, so I would dump it.  As far as risks...it's just whatever germs were left on the parts after your rinsing.  Because I wouldn't know what those were, I wouldn't trust it.  Again, I am super-paranoid.  I know it sucks to dump breastmilk...I have a hard time dumping even one feeding.  It feels like such a waste!

I've never steam sterilized my boobs.. just saying ;)

  • I don't sterilize parts every night, just wash with soap and warm water. I also only throw in dishwasher if happens to be full and planned to run it anyway, so maybe every few days. I did boil parts before first use. I'm curious what everyone says about this.

Ha! That is great. I would think that you're probably fine. I'd imagine it'd be worse to leave the milk out too long by accident than to just have rinsed your parts and not washed.

The freezer will kill off any bacteria that may have been there. bacteria has to be frozen a cerain way to survive a freeze. But I agree, if you thaw them, check for an off smell or taste and you should be fine.

This. I always rinsed with really hot water after each use, and washed with soap once a day to once every other day. Never had a problem. Just make sure you're refrigerating and freezing the actual milk the way you should be.
