any nurses?

this is probably a silly question but one that I just thought of... sorry if it is really dumb.

about a week before DS was born I went to the doctor because I had horrible Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. they injected both wrists with steroids.  Before DS was born I also got the two steroid injections for his lungs but the doctors were still amazed at how developed they were.  Could the steroids I got the week before have contributed to that? Probably not but I can't help but wonder?!?!

Re: any nurses?

  • I'm not a nurse, but I was on steroids for about 2 weeks after birth (I was on them for a bit prior to delivery) and I asked the NICU doctor if it was going to hurt the kids b/c the steroids were being passed to them in my milk.  He said it would actually help them instead of hurt, so I would think that yes, it could have helped!

  • Not a silly question!  I would wonder a) what type of steroid did you receive for the carpal tunnel injections? b) was it injected locally to the affected area?  If so might not have been systemic to effect the fetus. c) if it was over 7 days from your carpal injections to the birth, the efficacy of regular steroids given for fetal lung maturity is questionable.  It's definitely possible it could have helped but it could just be coincidence.  Luck, his gestational age at birth and the fact that you got two actual betamethasone injections before he was born probably played more of a role.  That's my semi-educated guess anyway Wink
  • I am a nurse & I actually asked a similar question before Ellie was born. I was on steroids (orally) my entire pregnancy because I have Lupus. I asked the neo if this would give her any extra benefit & he said probably not. It's more the sudden, high dose of steroids that you get with the Betamethasone injections that causes the bay to get ready. Ellie's lungs were actually under developed for her GA & she's needed steroids since to get things going. I think some of her lung issues could,be attributed to my low fluid during the last few weeks though.

  • Thanks guys!

I only got two injections, one in each wrist, and I have no idea what kind of steroid.

I guess if they helped that's great but if not oh well! They didn't do any harm at least!
