If your kid has seasonal allergies..

when do you give them their claritin or whatever medication you give?

I give DD Claritin first thing in the morning but she is waking up in the middle of the night with a super stuffy nose.

Does your medication work all day and night?

Should I switch the time when I give it to her?

Are you a doctor? Stick out tongue

  • I give DS2 Zyrtec at night, an hour or so before bed time. Within two days it seemed to clear all symptoms up.

I'm a neurosurgeon not an allergist but we give DS's allergy meds at night just incase they make him a wee bit drowsy. Also, I find it more important for him to be totally comfortable while sleeping than during the day when he can distract himself from the allergy effects. He gets itchy eyes, runny nose, cough. It doesn't seem to bother him too much when he's running around having fun but he would be miserable at night without his meds to keep him clear while he sleeps.

You think I could start that tonight or I should wait till tomorrow night because I gave her claritin this morning?

i give it to her right before bed. her symptoms are not as bad during the day, laying down makes the sinus congestion and cough worse. i have horrible allergies as well and it's always worse at night.

i am not a doctor lol, but her pedi also advised to give it at night.

  • DS is on Allegra, so he takes it twice per day. However, our pedi always has us give allergy meds at night.

  • We do Benadryl and Singulair at night, Claritin in the morning. It hit DS2 really hard this year. Usually he is just fine with only Claritin in the morning.

DS's allergist suggests giving Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra and Singular at bedtime. We find Zyrtec works best for DS compared to Claritin. Night doses mean its most effective in the AM when pollen is highest.

It takes the edge off but doesn't totally readicate symptoms.

Kids with seasonal allergies should have a shower/hairwashing nightly before bed. Her pillow should probably be cleaned/replaced and sheets washed regularly.

This is really important and it's good that you mentioned it. DS strips when he comes in for the day and showers. I keep his clothes in a bag in the laundry room. I don't let him put the pollen covered clothing in his room hamper.

He also wears sunglasses when outside at all times to protects his eyes. When he comes in, we flush his eyes out with natural tear rewetting drops.
