Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Recommended amount of milk-off bottle

So I was reading that age my DS's age he should still be getting about 24 oz. of milk a day. That is fine, bc he still gets a bottle once a day, sometimes twice. I am trying to completely get him off the bottles but feel like his milk intake won't be close to the recommended amount.

So...for you ladies who have your Lo's off the bottle, how are you doing getting them to get enough milk? My ds will drink from sippys but never close to the amount he would from a bottle.

Re: Recommended amount of milk-off bottle

  • Yikes - 24 oz seems like a lot. I don't think DD would drink that much every day and she *loves* milk.

DD is 15 months old, has been off bottles for 3 months and takes about 12-14 oz of milk per day in a sippy (I do one milk sippy at snack and another at dinner). Her pedi seems happy with that amount as she also eats yogurt and cheese.

  • At her 1 yr appointment, DD's pediatrician said she should be getting 3 servings of dairy each day.  To me that means milk, cheese, yogurt, etc.  Some days she gets that, some days a little less.  She's been on all sippy cups and WCM for a few weeks now.  She doesn't drink as much from them, but I give her WCM with each meal as well as before each nap.  We don't sit and give her the sippy cup like we did with the bottle so I don't expect her to just sit and drink it til it's gone.  She's growing right on track so I'm not worried.

  • I'd doublecheck that number with your pediatrician. 24 oz. sounds like a LOT. By the time DS was 18 months our pedi recommended 1020 oz. milk per day. Anything over that and DS wasn't likely getting sufficient vitamins, minerals and general nutrients from table food.

  • My pediatrician said my DD should drink no more than 16-20 oz.  He wasn't concerned how little she drank, but she shouldn't have more than that.  There are days she has closer to 24 oz because she LOVEs her milk.  She usually drinks a sippy when she first wakes up and then has another sippy and a half of another one after supper as we get ready for bed. Honestly, she really wasn't that interested in her sippy of milk until we completely eliminated bottles.

Our doctor told us 12 oz of whole milk per day nets DS all the calcium he needs, and to give less milk on days he eats more cheese and yogurt. Any more than that, she says, is unnecessary and constipating.
