DH is an asss! Your opinions are needed!

We are having a nautical theme for Jacks's first birthday. DH doesn't like it because apparently it's not kid-like. I figure I can have whatever theme I want since Jack doesn't have an opinion yet and I'm sure I have years ahead of me with Thomas the Train and monster parties, which I want to save for when Jack knows what's going on. My main gripe is that DH HATES the birthday outfit I picked out. He thinks it looks way too girly and he will be embarrassed when he's older and sees pictures. I think the outfit is adorable and will look great with his blonde hair and blue eyes. And I think my husband is being a major douche. Please give me your honest opinion on this outfit!

  • I think the outfit itself is super cute, however I think the color makes it a little more "girly" even though it is blue.  Do they have it in a darker blue?  Like a Navy blue?  That would fit the theme good!

I think that outfit is super cute and will look gorgeous w your son's coloring. And I agree, the theme should be what you like and not the kid, at this age.

That being said, if this baby is a boy, I am going to let dh have the say on things like attire etc, since he's a man. I've already thought about this, because IMO he might get more sensitive on things like this because of that. So if it were me, I'd seriously take my dh's opinion into consideration. Sorry!

I agree - I was also going to suggest a darker blue

    same here! Navy blue!

  • The outfit is darling.

Your husband is right - if, years from now, anyone ever sees a picture of your son wearing it, your son will likely get teased. Not in a bullying way, but definitely teased. My SIL posted a bunch of family pictures on Facebook, including one of DH's stepbrother in a pale blue short set with suspenders and bow tie, holding a stuffed animal. Adorable. But oh god, the $hit my BIL endured. LOL.

    Dark blue, for sure.

Yes, I wanted this outfit, it's the exact same except color, but I can't find it anywhere now! And the colors would be perfect!! Grrr!!

  • I love the navy version of the outfit! These are pretty simple to make. Do you know anyone who sews? Or have you checked out any children's consignment shops to see if they have the discontinued version?

With regards to the pastel, it doesn't strike me as girly, but it is a little bit young for him. I know our LOs are only a year, but I have tried to put this kind of thing on DS for church, and it always just looks odd. :(

  • I just googled "boy sailor outfit" and found a really cute one...nto exactly the same as the one you are looking for, but similar. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AAZJQG4/ref=asc_df_B00AAZJQG42500256?smid=AE1W1MIN15JZM&tag=sdcbing586-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395105&creativeASIN=B00AAZJQG4

  • Have you looked on ebay or etsy?  I just searched "baby sailor outfit" on ebay and turned up a lot of results that look similar to the one you posted, but also in Navy or white.

Personally, I think you should put him in what you want.  He's a baby/toddler for cripes sake, IMHO light blue is perfectly acceptable (but I do really like the "pop" of the navy with the red and white).

I don't think your son is going to care what he wore at his first birthday when he gets older. I think your DH is overreacting with that.

Anyway I put my DS in a sailor suit complete with hat and knee socks for Easter. He looked adorable and I'd do it again! Lol!

It's not girly. It is a traditional outfit. I had a very hard time finding one though. They only sold girl sailor outfits in the department stores around here. I lucked out by finding one in a local store.

I think you should do what you want. If you love it, go for it. He will look adorable. And you're 100 percent right that your DS will have years to come of superhero parties and Star Wars or whatever else he is into. Now is the time for you to do what you want, IMO.

I found both outfits on Totsy.com. I liked both but only bought the pale blue because they didn't have navy in his size. It's some obscure brand I've never heard of and can't find it anywhere else online. I might see if my mom's friend can make it. It looks pretty simple. For someone who knows how to sew, that is! Unfortunately, I do not. And the colors would match the decor better.

This is the one I have for DS. Except I have it in white. I bought it from a local store but I just googled Rare Editions sailor suit.

    ETA: fixed the link

I agree. My cousin put her twins in a similar outfit, but it was navy blue. If you already bought it, I think it will be fine, and DH will have to get over it.

If it was my DH I would ask him exactly what he has done to "help" with the b-day party (my DH to this point has done nothing--which is fine by me as I get to have things my way--hehe).

Then tell him (sarcastically of course) that you have to have some outfits that will embarrass DS later in life, otherwise it will be no fun when he brings a girl/ other friends over.--Sorry I am a real smart when it comes to stuff like this.

Jack's first birthday is really for you anyway! I read a quote a couple months back that hit home for me now that I am a mom: Birthdays--a day we celebrate you for a day your mom did all the work!

I say do what you want and tell DH to suck it!

LOL, thanks! He hasn't helped with anything, but I actually prefer that since he will just annoy me. Haha. The outfit was only $15 so I I end up getting another, I'm not out a bunch of money. That's what I tried to tell him about his birthday! It's a celebration of Jack turning one, but it's also a celebration of us making it through the first year in one piece! It's a hard time for everyone!!

I don't like it at all but that's because those style of clothes are just not my style at all. If you like it then who cares. I don't think he'll be embarrassed looking back.
