Gagging on food

MJ is 11 months now and she can't seem to get eating right. If the food is not the right texture she gags and throws up. Now I don't mean just table food, I'm talking baby oatmeal and sweet potatoes here! I gave her a Ritz cracker the other day and she gagged right at the end and threw the whole thing up.
I would like to try table foods but I feel that I should be done with cleaning up baby vomit at this stage. She does good with small pieces of mushy carrot but it's too slimy for her to pick up on her own. Maybe i should dry them on a paper towel before i cut them up? Any suggestions?? This kid even gagged on the gerber graduates tiny little apple pieces!

Re: Gagging on food

  • She may have a very sensitive gag reflex, and it will just take some time for her to get used to textures.  You could also talk to your pedi and see if an evaluation by a feeding therapist is needed.

I make long, skinny carrot sticks and steam them so they're soft, but not mushy.  DD can hold on to one end and chew on the other.  She did gag (but not vomit) at first until she figured out how to mush them up in her mouth.  Eating takes a lot of practice!

DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
