Won't lay on back?

My almost 6 week old wont lay flat on his back. Maybe a handful of times he has laid under his activity mat. But any time we lay him down even to change he cries and grunts and pulls his legs up. He's a gassy baby, but aren't most? He rarely spits up, or I might think reflux.

I'm just getting frustrated that I can't figure out how to help him. He sleeps okay by himself if he is in the RNP, swing, bouncer... with us constantly bouncing him... or our arms. We swaddle, but laying him flat just results in him kicking and kicking until he starts to cry and then scream. So the swaddle is pretty useless.

The dr basically just said he's a fussy baby who has to be trained to lay on his back but I really can't figure out how to do that. She suggested laying him down and patting his chest but that just pisses him off.

Has anyone else experienced this??

  • Is it after eating you notice it? Reflux doesn't always result in spitting up. DD has silent reflux where stuff comes back up in her throat but not far enough for her to spit up. My ped says it is actually more painful for her cuz she feels the acid on its way up and on its way down. It still is obvious though by watching her that she is experiencing this. She hates to burp, arches her back, at times sounds congested in her throat, etc.

I don't know a lot about it, but I would suggest you look into and consider silent reflux.

Otherwise, if that is ruled out, honestly I would try not to stress about it, and just give it time.  My son was like this, and he just outgrew it.  Now he is fine being changed (he used to scream), on his activity mat, etc.  we are going to try to transition him from the RnP soon.  Your LO just might outgrow it on his own too.

this is my LO.  The burping thing is the WORST, because she needs to burp so bad or else the gas just makes the reflux worse......but i know she hates it. She's on zantac, so she's gotten over it slightly.....

my LO seems ok at night, for some reason during the night time she puts herself back to sleep fairly well when she wakes up, but during the day the reflux bugs her and she can't go back to sleep after one cycle
