Has anyone else's RE spoken to them about this?
I am 25 and was on 100mg of clomid and came out with 4 good looking follicles. I triggered, but not before the RE had a talk with us about selection reduction.
I do have a small frame (5'1 and 115 pounds-ish) and I KNOW 3-4 babies would be dangerous and insane, so right away I said I am fine with it. I went home and thought about it and it's really scary and controversial. I am trying not too think to much into it until I found out if I am pregnant, there is a good chance there are zero babies, never mind 3 or 4, but it's a pretty intense decision to have to make.
My RE says that because of my age and all things taken into account, she pegs me at a 50% chance of multiples-if I get pregnant at all.
I can't really talk to anyone IRL about this because its such a sensitive and controversial issue. I would love 2 (and RE thinks that would be good) because she is a little concerned about my high FSH (highest was 16 so far, but its been 6 also) and my ability to have kids down the road. I always said I wanted more then 2, so this is really scary.
Re: Selective Reduction
I don't know if it's legally required in all states but aside from the talk, I had to sign a waiver about HOM and or selective reduction. Basically, we signed saying we were OK with the idea of the need for selective reduction, but that we'll make the decision should we ever come to it. I've never had more than three mature follies for all four of my IUIs - and while I know they could split to identical twins we've obviously never had to face the idea head on.
I think with my frame of 5'6 if we were blessed with trips or quads we would not talk about selective reduction unless my health was seriously in danger but any more than that and we'd have to have serious talks.

I guess so! last cycle I just had 2 good ones, so no talk. this month with 4, had the talk. what is the most amount of follicles you have had?
My RE had this talk with me before prescribing anything. Fortunately I only had two follies this cycle which I was happy with. If we were to have 4 or more large follies we'd cancel the cycle.

We sigend consents letting us know our options and our stance when it comes to HOM. DH and I made a decision on when/if we would reduce before even starting treatment.
I think it is good that the RE talks to you about it, but ultimately it is your call.
the most I have had is 2. Is it something they have to talk to you about? I live in MS, which is known for being pretty conservative...could it possibly be a cultural thing?

Scebdi, I'm pretty surprised they haven't mentioned it at all yet. I live in AL which is equally conservative and my RE's office made it very clear that I had to have a sit down appointment with my RE to discuss this before I could start any meds at all. I didn't have to sign anything though.

This is all news to me so thank you for the info. I think I will talk to DH and then mention it to my RE next time I am in, or at least the nurse to see their protocol. Thank you!

right, same for us basically. the RE said you can either not have sex this cycle, or have sex but you may be faced with that choice. I said if she feels comfortable with it then I am okay with it. Multiples in the form of twins would be wonderful so I didn't want to waste a potentially good cycle.
I had to sign it before we started any treatment. If your RE has not even mentioned it, then like I said - I assume it's not legally required in all states. But I think it is here in Illinois since I've heard others from my area all say they had to sign something. I think it helps the doctor for malpractice issues should anything go wrong. But for any RE, I do think it should at least be discussed when you have three or more follies.

All good RE's should have this discussion with their patients - they have to prep you. I had to sign paperwork acknowledging the possibilities and risks. This is standard in my RE's office. I am sure they have to cover all their liability issues... that being said...
We don't believe in selective reduction, I know my risks and discussed them with My RE. He knows based on my beliefs that we be more conservative with our treatment.
For me...it is all in God's hands.
