Babies: 6 - 9 Months

8 Months Old and Still Doing Purees

LO is 8 months old and still just does purees. She just does not seem to have the patience to sit and eat a lot and anything with a texture she will "gag" on it. I give her Puffs which will dissolve but she still acts like she is gagging on them from time to time. She has had a regular avocado so far and did ok with it and I tried an egg yolk and she really didn't seem to like that texture. I'm a little worried that she just doesn't seem all that interested in "real" foods. We do a Stage 1 fruit for breakfast, yogurt for lunch and oatmeal with some baby food mixed in and a stage 1 veggie. She also nurses about 5-6 times a day still.

She doesn't seem to have the interest in eating and especially anything with any texture to it and I just wonder if it is a phase or something that I need to encourage more.

Re: 8 Months Old and Still Doing Purees

  • Trying cooking some butternut squash or sweet potato your self, and mash them instead of pureeing them. Maybe if it is something she's used to, she may accept the food a little more lumpy? Or try real peas, but squished? You could also try pears, steam them and then mash them with lumps. Not sure if this will work as my daughter eats everything but if there is something she really likes, she might be will to eat them? You could also try pears, steam them and then mash them with lumps.

You're worrying too much. Seriously. Ever heard the saying "food before one is just for fun"? She will eventually start eating more and eating more than just purees.

DS is the same age and still only gets 1, maybe 2 meals a day. I give him whole food every now and then (sliced watermelon, mango, apples, etc.), but I'm not concerned. Easier for me if he doesn't want more. Smile Lol.

Just keep offering small amounts of food at a time and she'll eventually start eating more.

It just seems like EVERYONE is doing BLW and my baby is just way more interested on putting her bib in her mouth and chewing on it then food. She just isn't really all the interested. She is a chunky monkey so I know she is healthy, just hasn't caught on with food that doesn't come from mommy yet!

No offense, but this doesn't make sense at all. OP said LO doesn't like "textured" foods, so why would she give her purees with lumps in them?

Wait, so your suggestion is to feed the LO purees for the rest of her life? I just offered her some suggestions if she would like her DD eating some more lumpy food. Suggestions...that is all. I would keep trying the lumpy, textured food, so that hopefully eventually my LO would start liking it as she gets more used to it. This is just my opinion, if you don't agree with it, perhaps you shouldn't be on a website where people ask for people's opinions. Or perhaps your opinions, are always perfect? Anyways, you provide a snarky response, you get one back.

  • Oh, and some kids just aren't good eaters! My nephew hated nearly all the food my sister gave him...and now at 10 years old...he still is a super picky eater. I'm sure she'll come around...your bf so that is full nutrition anyways! You are doing a great job...no need to worry!

  • My LO is the same way. She is going on 8 months and can't do anything more than Stage 2 and some of those she can't even do without gagging or spitting out. She does like cheerios and puffs though. I am not worried, I have some friends say their babies did this until 12 months and then turned it around. I might have to do more BLW as she gets older. she just might not like the idea of thickened purees but likes real food? Who knows, don't worry! Calories should all be coming from BM or Formula still :)

  • I know babies who don't start puffs till 10 or 11 months. I wouldn't worry. Maybe try letting her play with some textured foods on her tray? I let DD "paint" with prunes and sweet potatoes on a piece of paper taped down to her tray and all she wanted to do was eat it lol so you could try chunkier or textured purees, dumping them on LO's tray and letting them explore it. It's just for fun! But don't stress! Eventually LO will show a desire for textured foods or more food that they can eat themself. Just keep offering stuff and be patient.
  • I think you are much too worried about this!  LO is still doing purees only and she is just fine.  She doesn't like the consistency/ texture of other foods and that is fine.  She eats purees and likes them, but for right now, she really only needs formula or BM.  So, I am not going to worry about it.  She will eat when she is ready to and we will keep working on it here and there but I am not going to force her to eat stuff.

  • My daugther is 10 months old and still eats purees.  We tried a few weeks ago w/ lumpier stuff and she kept throwing up a ton.  We are slowing transitioning to thicker foods again and this time she's doing better.  She's not going to be 16 and eating baby food.  They'll transition when they are ready.

  • Cut her puffs in half. Dd gags on whole puffs but eats .5 of a puff like a champ!
