Toddlers: 24 Months+

"It's not dark outside!"

We usually try to start DD's bath between 7 and 7:30. Because of daylight savings, she now says "it's not dark outside" and sometimes gets pretty upset that its time for bath. Some nights are worse than others. I tried to explain that it doesn't matter and bath starts at 7:30. She turned three in Feb, so she doesn't have a concept of time. I thought about getting one of those toddler clocks or even setting an alarm on our phone with a fun ring tone. Anyone else dealt with this? Any suggestions?

  • Mine says that too, but doesn't care so much about when we bathe. More as long as we don't go to bed until it's dark, she's ok. I find with my kids, making up something like "The bath fairy said it's ok to take a bath before it gets dark" she will be excited to hear more about this bath fairy. Get a new toy for the bath maybe to get her excited, and say she can only have this toy if we take bath when mommy says.

  • :snort: DD uses the same line. What a little smarty pants.

For her it's a stalling tactic and we just try to power through it. She's been pulling it for months now so she's started to realize that it's not going to work.

  • Dd says it too, that and "but the birdies are still chirping." We've been powering through it. I think the big problem will come when she hears the older kids playing this summer.

  • Black out curtains?  We have Navy black out curtains and it id dark in DS's room. ;) We got a toddler clock a few weeks ago too and it has worked surprisingly well!  I really had little hope for it, but he seems to care that the light is red or green.

  • Black out curtains - they make his room totally dark.  It helps.

  • She may not have a strong sense of time, but even at three, she can start to learn it.  She either already does or can learn to recognize numbers, and you can have a digital clock and show her what time it is.  She doesn't have to understand the flow of time and how it moves to know that 7:00 means bathtime.  (DD loves 6:45, because that (used to) mean dessert time.)

  • oh yes. :) this started last year already with DST. I ended up getting room darkening curtains for her windows so her room is dark all the time. but getting her out of the bright living room was quite problematic for some time (last year). recently I started shutting the TV off at least 1/2 hour before she's got to get ready for bed. then we just sit and do something quietly (legos, color, talk). this has helped so much it's crazy. I think it's cuz she's eased more into the getting ready for bed transition. but definitely get the room darkening shades if you don't already have.

I do have room darkening shades for her room, but I haven't put them up yet. But, yes, the problem with her is getting her out of the living room to the bath. She literally looks outside to see its not dark yet. She's so funny. We've been powering through it, too. But some nights are worse than others. We might try the toddler clock or digital clock and see how it goes.
