I've always thought they were kind of silly but Lucas loves to splash so we got him one for his birthday and wow does he love it. So do both big brothers too. Silly me should have got one 8 years ago.
I got a sand/water steal at a garage sale. $3. It looks pretty used but I cleaned it and DS plays in it everyday he can! He loves picking up little sticks and making them into "boats" We have not used the sand part yet. He will probably try to eat it, too but we will live and learn!

They are great for kids! In kindergarten it's one of the most popular centres!
We bought a sand/water table for Addie on sale at the end of last summer. We will use it with water only this year and then when she's no longer putting everything in her mouth get some sand.
Is it just water?
The ones I see always have sand too and I think she would just eat it!
even if it shows sand on the cover you can just put water on both sides. That's what we are doing!
We did this too. She LOVES it. Shown clearly by this photo from the weekend. lol
She got so excited smashing the boats together and splashing. It was in the house because DH put it together at 9am and it was still too cool for her to be splashing outside and he got impatient lol.
My sister bought one for Ky for his birthday. I can't wait for the weather to get nicer for us to set it up. I know he will love it because he loves the bath tub and the dogs water bowls

Oh, DUH!!! Now I wish I would have gotten the combo table for DD's 1st birthday. I got just the water one because I was scared of her eating the sand! haha!

The combo ones get really gross in time a separate sand area is better I think from watching my friends kids over the years. But eating sand has never hurt a kid all of mine plus all my nieces haven eaten handfuls with no side effects, so if dd does at a playground or something don't worry.
I know we're a long way off from this... but just for interest's sake... in our province (and I expect many places) one of the outcomes for Kindergarten science is actually to know how sand is different when it is wet and when it is dry. Also understanding floating/sinking, etc. So much stuff that those sand and water tables can teach! plus they're fun! My best memories of Kindergarten (as a student) are with the sandbox!
