Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Swing? ::added pics::

Hello, I normally post on my BMB board but realized that development happens over a couple months with things and it might be helpful to hang out over here too!
My Alivia is 4.5 months old and she is our first.

Has anyone tried the baby swings in the park yet? I'd like to take her today I it warms up but thought unread somewhere they need to be able to sit up unassisted first. I know there are guidelines out there for everything under the sun...I'm wondering I anyone had used them before baby could sit up alone? Of course we'll be right there with her and not just walking off :

  • I definitely wouldn't trust my DD in a swing even though she has good neck control. I'm going to wait until she can sit on her own and even then I'll feel it out.

    Can I ask why? Is it so she doesn't hot her head? Or just too floppy? Lol

  • We did.  They were the black bucket kind and her head barely rose over the bucket, so there kind of was a head rest.  Her dad stood in back and I stood in front and we moved her back and forth between us about a foot.  She was unimpressed.  She had unsteady head control and was 3.5 months (1.5 adjusted) when we did this.
  • I did it. She was slightly slouched but its not like I went behind and pushed her hard lol

  • I would wait until they have more control over their little bodies. That way they won't slouch, flop around, or fling themselves about. Since lots of babies at this age will fling themselves out of things. By waiting until they can sit unassisted and can support themselves in it can prevent these things. I would give it until closer to 7 or 8 months.

  • It's worth trying, but my first DS didn't really enjoy/tolerate being in them long until he was in the 7-8mo range.

  • Yes!  DD has been using the bucket swings at the park almost every day since she was 3.5 months old.  She is very strong and has great neck control.  She is just starting to really enjoy the swing, at first she was unimpressed.  Now she squeals with excitement when I put her in :-)

  • FYI Fisher Price makes a red plastic swing that can be reclined for newborns. We bought it for less than 25 bucks from Target or Amazon. We've used it since he was a couple weeks old. He loves it, and it has a high weight limit. My friend's almost 3 year old still uses it as a swing.

  • Thanks for all the responses. Nothing really jumped out at me saying "absolutely don't do it"... So we did!
    She just lounged back in it. We got a couple grins but she mostly just sat there lol.
    I did have her on my lap on the big swing going slow and she just completely relaxed.

    The picture above of Emma is very cute! I can't see on mobile how old is she?
