My grandfather was Solomon and went by Sol. A few years ago I knew a baby Solomon whose parents started calling him "Solly" (it wasn't a planned nn). I don't know if that's continued beyond the baby stage.
I love Solomon. I could see Sol as a nickname, but would probably spell it Saul. I want to say "sole" when I see "sol" (I've obviously been in Southern California too long)
I worked with a Solomon and he was very nerdy, good with computers, in a band and definitely marched to the beat of his own drummer. The name was different, and so was he.
In general it seems like an old Jewish man name, like Ira or Leonard.
I know a 6 yr old name Solomon who isn't Jewish. His parents call him Sol. (I don't mind Solomon, but really, really dislike Sol.) Our other friend, who is Jewish, likes to call him Shlomo sometimes as a NN.
I know a little boy named Solomon. He's 5 and in my preschool class, also my DDs very best boy friend! At first I thought the name was so odd and uncommon but have grown to love it. He's a sweet boy and very well behaved. He usually goes by Solomon but sometimes Solly.
I've never met anyone with this name IRL. It is a very strong sounding name and I think people will probably love it or leave it. I'm not a huge fan, but don't hate it.
Re: Solomon
It's just OK. I know one Solomon-- he does go by Sol (family friend). He's in his 60s.
I sort of picture an old man playing chess in Prospect Park.

He is a shy little boy, but well behaved.
My aunt had a dog named Solomon...but we're considering it anyway!
