Trouble TTC

Genetic Screening Question

So I'm having all my bloodwork redone at my clinic (where it is covered 100%) this month, that way when I see the RE in June we are good.

They recommened a bunch of Genetic screening. My physician at my clinic (who the bloodwork is under for now) said she doesn't see why. Said I have no family history, no risk factors and she doesn't recommend it. She did do the CF and one other, but didn't order the rest for me.

Should I push the issue or is she right? Did you all have genetic screening tests? I don't want to miss something!

TIA!

  • Our fertility clinic encourages genetic screening before IVF. I just sent my saliva test off yesterday. I had been putting it off, because I just couldn't face another bad diagnosis! Now that I've put it off, I'm a little worried, because it takes 2-3 weeks to get results back, and if I test positive for something, DH will have to be tested! We are starting IVF in July. I guess if it came down to it, he could go to a lab in the city where it would take as long to get back. Anyhow, I really didn't want to get it done, but my DH insisted it would be better to know now than later. I told him that "normal" people don't get tested before they start trying the natural way!
It's just a personal decision you will have to decide. I know that was a lot of rambling, I hope I made some sort of sense out of all of that!

My RE does it when a flag like DOR or something shows up.   It wasn't part of our initial workup (which was extensive, and screened for the antibodies...), but as soon as I was DX'd with DOR the genetic screening happened.    I imagine if I were partnered with a man and either he had low sperm or we had experienced losses it would be a quick flag to do it as well.

Honestly, the genetic screen was nerve-wracking, but the piece of mind to know where things sit and my risk factors was really good.   Just remember it may take a LONG time to get the results!  It was about 6 weeks for mine.

  • They included info about testing in our initial packet. I reviewed all the info and talked to my doctor about it and we opted to decline the general screening.
After getting diagnosed and meeting with medical genetics we did opt to have Fragile X testing and karyotyping done. We also will be pursuing additional testing on me later in the summer for specific gene mutations, but that is for my overall health vs anything IF related.
