Hardcore Constipation Remedies

Okay so Cheeks is constantly constipated (say that 10x fast). I've tried the diluted brown sugar water, 4 oz of prune juice a day, etc. Our DCP suggested Miralax. I plan on calling the pedi tomorrow, but I also thought I would ask here for suggestions.

Any ideas?

  • I've heard that pears and/or pear juice helps!

  • Pears did amazing things for ds. They ran right through him and he loved them. They were our go to if we needed to force stuff out. Who knew they were so high in fiber? Good luck, Cheeks.

  • If LO goes two days, I give him prunes for breakfast and spinach for dinner. Usually I just mix a cube of spinach in to something else because he doesn't really care for it alone. Good luck!!

  • mangos do the trick for Ethan! Or peaches. My SIL swears by miralax. She puts it in every bottle (I question this, but it's not my kid ;)

We've given a liquid suppository once or twice. Sure cleans him out. There are pediatric ones in the pharmacy section.

I have done this too. I just give a little bit of it and he poops almost immediately. It is almost like a baby enema.

  • Try pears first, give it a bit of time to work through his system and then a gentle Q tip up the bum when he's straining. Yes, it's unpleasant, but it worked great on my oldest when he was really constipated.
  • I've done pear juice to try and keep him regular and not had the greatest luck. He's just in so much pain when he tries to poop. It's sad!

I haven't been feeding him cereal or any other constipating foods either.

  • I've heard of Karo syrup mixed in the bottle,I can't endorse that from experience.

For Vivi, we used diluted juice, prunes or pears, and when all else failed glycerin suppositories.

Alice has major constipation issues. We have tried juice, fruits everything. Karo syrup gave her a belly ache. So the pedi had us use Miralax. One packet in 8oz of water then only add one or two ounces of the water to a bottle once a day.

Now we only have to use it about once  or twice a week to help her. I was very apprehensive about the Miralax but it has really helped her. She was in so much pain before :(

i hope you get the worked out for cheeks!

  • Yes definitely probiotics work! It helped regulate my DD. The best one is Baby BioGaia probiotic drops. It's just expensive.
  • My DS gets constipated too. We totally cut out cereal/oatmeal because it's iron fortified and was making it worse. He gets enough iron in the formula.

Have you tried the pureed prunes? That clears him out.

  • DS eats pears daily to keep him regular otherwise he clogs up haha :P I always stick by foods starting with 'P' are good for constipation!

  • Have you tried karo syrup? My sister had to give my niece miralax on a daily basis for quite a while around the same age.

Alivia has the same problems. I agree with prunes, they are the only thing I have found to help her out. I usually feed them to her for breakfast and by the afternoon she's cleaned out. When I spoke to the nurse about Alivia's issues she also recommended Miralax if the issue continued. Poor C :(

ETA: You shouldn't use Kayro. I was told when DS was a baby that it is a no no. I guess it has a lot of the same properties as honey.

worked like a charm for my LO.  and you may have it in the house already.  a tablespoon in his bottle.  warm up the bottle a little bit too and the karo syrup mixes better.   my pedi said clear, but my nurse practitioner said dark.  either one works.

I wouldn't think so.  Babies can't have honey because it's a raw food that can contain botulism spores.    Karo syrup is a processed corn syrup...which would be the reason *I* wouldn't give it to them...but, I doubt there is a botulism risk there.

Toni, try apple juice and putting him in an exersaucer or jumperoo.

  • Have you tried heating up the pear or prune juice a little?  That's my best trick as a nurse.

For DS, I've had to push his legs towards his belly and use a thermometer several times.  I would hold his legs open while he pushed out the brick. So sad when they're constipated. :(  Hope he feels better soon.

Thankfully DS doesn't have his problem. He inherited a good digestive tract from DH! However when we had him on soy formula he got very constipated and would struggle. We were told to use dark kyro syrup in the bottle. It's 1 tsp per 4 oz I believe. It really helped him. Made the poop smell horrible but I think that was from the soy too! The poops were much softer for him to pass! GL Cheeks!

  • Thanks guys! Yep he's on probiotics and his formula has probiotics in it too! Ugh.

I will try actual pureed prunes, rather than the juice. The nurse line at the pedi's office said no miralax yet (they think he's too young) but I can up the prune juice to 1 oz per month he is old (so almost 9 oz.) and they told me to just mix it with a little water rather than putting it in his formula like I have been.

Oh I forgot to add, if you are buying the pureed prunes don't by the ones mixed with apples, they don't work as well. The Gerber stage one prunes are the best for us.

That's just what I was told when the Pedi chewed me out for giving it to DS when he was constipated. It didn't work for him anyway so I only gave it to him once.

Miralax is the only thing that worked for DS1.  He's 3.5 and gets it every single day.

He only takes his stuff warm. He's a diva.

And I tried helping him get it out by pushing his legs up into his chest too. Poor guy. I know DCP has done that and helped him push it out before.
