Babies: 3 - 6 Months

First feeding of rice cereal

LO is fours months, five days old. Last night, I attempted to give him rice cereal for the first time.  With the second small spoonful, he made an unhappy face, gagged and milk from his feeding came pouring out of his mouth.

I waited an half hour and tried again. Same reaction.

He had previously seemed so interested in when any adult ate solids around him, so I thought he was ready.

Anyone else have this reaction or any advice?

  • I'd say maybe try again tomorrow and if the outcome is the same, perhaps your LO just isn't quite ready yet. You can always go back to exclusive BF or FF for a week or two and try again. Its still so early. Your LO has plenty of time to get used to the idea of solids.

  • We are also at four months and trying cereal.  I give it to them a little before I would normally give a bottle so I know they are hungry but not fussy. Then I give them their bottle after.  Good Luck!
  • Couple things - 4 months is the absolute youngest for trying solids so he may not be ready and that's fine.  There's no rush.  It sounds like you tried the cereal not long after the bottle.  While solids AFTER the bottle is the right order, the natural gagging that happens a lot with solids is likely what make him puke.  I'd personally A) hold off a little longer to try again and B) do the solids feeding about halfway between the time you end one bottle and the time you'll start another to give his stomach time to rest.

  • He could just not be ready. But a couple things you could try is give it an hour or two after his bottle/breast feeding.  Also, perhaps you need to make the cereal a little more runny?  I'm sure how thick you made it the first time.  But the first several feeding the cereal will almost look just slightly thicker than water.  In the beginning its not about acutally eating much cereal as it is getting use to the use of the spoon and pushing food toward the back of the mouth and swallowing.
  • Did you try making it more watery? Maybe it was a little thick. I also just put a little bit on his lips and let him lick it for the first feedings so he's not getting a real spoonful yet. Good luck :)

  • Just because they're showing interest doesn't mean they're ready to actually eat solid food.  It sounds like he still has a pretty strong gag reflex and that he's choking.  I would definitely stop trying to give it to him, wait a bit, and try again.  4 months is early to start solids.

  • We haven't started solids yet but what my doctor recommended is to first try feeding DD just breastmilk or formula with the spoon to get her use to eating from a spoon then add the cereal after a few days
