Preemies

35weeker sleep q

I know I am likely over thinking things but thought I'd check with some experienced moms here.

My daughter is now 8weeks, born at 35w0d.  She was healthy and strong when born so no medical complications.

She sleeps a lot. I know it is normal for babies and even more so for preemies but it worries me a bit.

Here's the breakdown of last 24hrs.

yesterday

1pm fed and down for nap.

2:45 she woke, fed and she hung out with us (she took a 20min nap during this time)

6pm fed and asleep

7:15 woke but seemed tired

7:45 fed and asleep

10:30 I woke and fed her, asleep by 11pm

2:30 woke, fed asleep by 3

5:30 woke, fed and sleep by 6

7:45 woke fed and played

9am fed and asleep

11:30 woke, fed dozed off for 20min in my arms while burping then up around 12noon

In total including time while feeding she was awake for maybe 7 hours in a 24 hour period at 8 weeks old. All the sleep was in her crib, so not a moving swing putting her to sleep.

When she is awake she is alert and looking around, starting to smile etc.

She rarely cries but when she does she is a loud one!

The reason I ask is a concerned friend cautioned me that her son was the same way an nurses kept saying how lucky she was but it turned out her son had hypothyroidism and it wasn't discovered until she made them check.

I don't think she has that as she does have times where she is wide awake and alert but it does concern me a bit.

Thanks.  I keep hearing people with little ones this age saying their baby takes 2-3 short naps a day and are up for hours at a time.  I feel like mine doesn't even have 3 awake periods a day.

I know sleep is really important for their development.  Just want to make sure I am not missing something and she's sleeping for other reasons!

I had a 35weeker and she slept A LOT until she hit about 14 weeks. She probably slept 18+ hours a day. My pedi said it's normal because I was concerned too. She's awake most of the day now (she's 4.5 months actual).

  • My DD was born at 35w0d too and she slept a ton for the first three months. your baby is sleeping more like a 3 week old rather than her actual age, which is totally normal. My DD is almost 8mon actual and only naps 23 times a day now.

This is about the same for my 35 weeker too. He has always slept a lot and still naps after every 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Most days he takes up to a 3 hour nap in the middle of the day.

  • I can't remember how often my DS1 (33 weeker) slept at 8 weeks, though I remember him sleeping a lot as newborns all really do.. If you are concerned I would just give your pedi a call!
