First word?

DS has been saying mama and baba but hubby refuses to call it his first word because he doesn't know what he's saying and he says its too early. Is he right or just upset its not dada?

Re: First word?

  • DD is doing the same thing, except she is saying dada and baba! I think it is even though they don't know.

I don't think its too early.  My first 2 didn't say their first words until they were about 8-9 months old which among my friends was considered late.  However, they were very early in their physical developments: rolling, crawling, walking (DS walked at 9 1/2 months old).  I've been told they either excell at physical or verbal things first and my kids have always been physical and became better talkers later.  The MMM sound isn't generally a bable noise that I've heard (its ususally D- which is why most babies say Dada first).  So my vote is congrats- you won the first word race!!  DH & I always friendly compete which of our names our kids will say first- so far we each have a point and are waiting on our tie breaker.

It's just babbling at that age.

This. They aren't real words until they associate it and can purposely say it. Usually 7 months. 6 isn't unheard of though. They are learning how to form consonants right now, so if you mix them with ah or oh you get what sounds like a word. Google it.

  • I would just consider that babbling. For DS#2, his first real word was "ball" around 6-7 months because he associated meaning with it.  We would show him a ball and he would say, "ball."

Wow, I haven't thought about at what age they might start talking. It seemed so far away, but now not so much. It's weird to think that in 3 more months DS could possibly begin saying a word or two.

  • Our baby says "OMG" and we're like "OMG!, are you surprised, baby?" But we are not counting OMG as her first word because 1) she didn't learn that from us so I don't think she means it; and 2) embarrassing first word...

I wouldn't count it as a first word unless you know she is calling you mama. Or associates whatever it is w something. DSs was mama, he was like 8 months old and although he'd been 'saying mama' for awhile, it was the first time he started saying it directed at me. Quickly followed by ball and then dada.
