Preemies

35 week delivery question?

I'm currently 32 weeks pregnant w/ my second. I had PreE with my first pregnancy and made it to 37 weeks. I'm now showing signs of Pree and have been put on bed rest. Waiting on the results from my 24hr urine collection to figure out the plan.
My OB mentioned if there is protein in my urine I'm looking at a 35 week induction.
This scares me so much. I was wondering what your experience was. If anyone delivered around 35 weeks There is also no NICU at the hospital I will be delivering at also. TIA!

My son was born at 35 weeks in respiratory distress. He spent two weeks in the nicu weaning off of breathing assistance and oxygen and then learning how to eat from a bottle. Lots of 35 weekers dont need any nicu time though. Does your OB not think you even need to deliver at a hospital with a nicu?

We didn't really discuss it too much yet. After my lab results come back I have an appt. on Tuesday to further discuss.
He said if it was before 35weeks I wouldn't be able to deliver at my hospital. My worry is that if the baby is not OK he would be flown to a hospital w/ a NICU. I don't want to be away from baby.
It's just a lot to take in. I was really hoping this wouldn't happen again. Like I said its nothing definite yet tho.
Thanks for sharing your story w/ me.

I had my sweet baby girl at 35 weeks this past December. She scored 9 on her Apgar and was not in the NICU. She didn't have jaundice either and my pedi was very surprised because preemies usually do. She was 5 lb 3 oz and 18.5 in. The only issue we had was with breastfeeding. She wouldn't latch so I've been exclusively pumping since the day she was born. She couldn't be healthier. I feel incredibly blessed. Good luck to you!

  • My daughter was born at 35+2. She ended up in the NICU on day 5 basically as a complication from jaundice (couldn't stay warm enough when on the bili blanket so she spent a night in an isolette under the lights and warmer.)

I had steroid shots at 26 weeks (when pre-e set in) and I think that helped a LOT.

  • My daughter was born at 33.5 weeks (PROM/high blood pressue) and only needed 48 hrs in the NICU.  As pp said I would be very cautious about delivering where there isn't a NICU that early and would ask what types of emergencies they can handle.  DD scored high on her apgar's but had jaundice and trouble gaining weight/minor sugar issues.  Best of luck!
  • My dd was born at 35 weeks due to pre e. She was a peanut though and only 3 lbs 11 oz they believe she stopped growing around 33 weeks due to the fact that my placenta was small. She spent 8 days in the NICU and other then size and needing a feeding tube at first she was healthy. Now she is almost 22 months and caught up to her age group in height/ weight.
    Good luck

  • My second DD was born at 34w 5d due to PTL, she was in the NICU for 14 days because of jaundice, a's/b's and learning how to eat. Every baby is different. I would see if you can deliver at a hospital with a NICU, like you I would not want to be away from my baby if they had to be flown to another hospital. Praying that your LO will stay put for a few more weeks.

Sorry, no help with your question, but I would really worry about giving birth at a hospital without a NICU if you are delivering early. I would recommend talking to your doctor about switching hospitals, even if that means a different doctor delivers. Good luck!

  • Crashing new dad to be.  I was a premie born about 35-36 weeks back in '83.  At 6lbs 8 oz, they said if I was full term, I would have been over 9 pounds.  I had failure to thrive, was in NICU, had a treaciostomy and a host of other issues.  Plus, I turned out to be allergic to virtually every antibiotic they gave me.  7 surgery's in 14 months.  I did have physical/speech therapy for a couple years early on.  I am also told that I was one of the most happy babies/little kids in the world.

    ----HOWEVER---

I am now 29, 6'6'' tall, married expecting my first child. I am a sales executive in the medical field.  They told my parents I would never ride a bike, swim or play sports- I literally rode the tires off my first bike (at 7 years old).  I won state champion for swimming in HS.  I am an Eagle Scout, I play basketball, baseball and football.  All around, I turned out okay.  OH- I am also expecting my wife and I first child/son in September.

So for all you moms out there who are nervous of the out comes of a premie, just think that I was born in 1983 before many of the amazing advances in medical technology we have today and turned out a-okay.

  • DS was one day shy of 35 weeks and needed 6 days in the NICU.  Not trying to add to your fear, but I would not be comfortable delivering in a hospital without a NICU.  DS was 6.7lbs and we were really lucky that he didn't need anything other than an IV for low blood sugar and billi lights.  GL!

    2 years, 2 surgeries, 2 clomid fails, 2 IUIs, 1 loss, IVF #1 - 10/25/10 = BFP!, DS is now 3.5yrs!
    TTC #2 - 6/12 surgery #3, FET #1 & 1.2 = BFN, 12/2012 FET #2 = BFP! DD is 1.5 yrs!
    Surprise! 12/16/14 BFP, loss #2 12/31/14

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

My daughter was born 35w0d. She was sent to NICU for exam.  After about 4 hr she was allowed back to our room to stay.

She had low blood sugar (due to my type 1 diabetes) and she had a touch of Jaundice on night 4 so spent one night under the lights then was clear.

She had a vicious latch and suck so no eating issues.

She was large at 8lbs0oz,  due to my diabetes and her daddy's family of 9-11lb babies.

We were very, very lucky.  I had been on bedrest for 4 weeks prior to her arrival for pre-term contractions (every 3min 24/7).

I received the steroid shots shortly before 32 weeks.

My husband was born 6 weeks early (30 years ago) and he had no health issues at all as well.

  • Just wanted to also add my opinions....  I don't think 35 weekers should ever be intentionally delivered at a hospital without at least a level II special care nursery/NICU.  I was mother-baby nurse and at least half or more of our 35 weekers required special care nursery.  As a LC described it to me, 35-36 weekers usually have one foot in preemieland and one foot in full term land.  They may look like a full term baby but they often have preemie issues (jaundice, low blood sugar, unable regulation temp, too sleepy to eat, and sometimes brief respiratory issues).  Best wishes to you!
  • My DD was born at 35w0d and required a one week nicu stay due to having a pneumothorax. She was 5lbs 17in. I would be extremely wary about delivering with no nicu, due dates are not exact and I wouldn't want to risk it. Either way good luck and congrats on your new baby!
