Cloth Diapering

CDing and Day Care against the law?

Ladies,

When I started working on my stash and decided we wanted to CD, I knew it might be a challenge to find a day care that would get on board. But read a few blog posts about it, saw that families seemed successful if they used a convenient diaper like pockets or AIOs, and went for it. Now I've come across Michigan's laws and it appears to me that they can only be used for a medical reason AND if a diaper service is unavailable. That seems crazy to me and I'm wondering if I just cost myself a ton of money by investing in a stash that we won't be able to use full time unless we can find family or friends or someone for in-home care. This is the law that I've read. Please tell me if I'm reading it correctly. I don't know what to do!

Diapers shall be disposable or from a commercial diaper service. If a child?s health condition necessitates that disposable diapers or diapers from a commercial service cannot be used, then an alternative arrangement may be made according to the child?s parent or licensed health care provider.

(10) The following shall apply when cloth diapers or training pants are used:

(a) No rinsing of the contents shall occur at the center.

(b)There shall be a waterproof outer covering that shall not be reused until thoroughly washed and sanitized.

  • Our daycare center requires a doctor's note for using cloth, but it was really easy to get.  I just told the pediatrician about it, and she wrote on a prescription pad that DS should be allowed to use cloth diapers.  It really was that simple and looks like all you would need too.  I don't see anything in that copied stuff that looks much different than what the rules we follow say.

  • Have you called or toured any daycares yet and asked? I cannot believe it would be against your state laws!  I'm not surprised they won't rinse them for you. I'm in PA and my daycare certainly doesn't spray diapers or even pull out pocket inserts for me. They also require each diaper to be separately bagged. But that's ok.

We haven't yet because we are so far from needing it. We think we have family and friends who will share the duty for the time after I go back to teaching after maternity leave until the end of the year.

I did do further reading and it looks like that law is only for "Day Care Centers" but that in home day cares don't have to follow that rule. They can simply bag separately.

I definitely didn't think they'd do anything with them but put them in a wet bag for us to care for when we got home, but I didn't think we'd have a law against it. lol

If this becomes necessary, I hope our pediatrician ends up being this easy to work with about it.

  • That seems ridiculous! I live in Kalamazoo, MI, and my daycare was totally okay with cloth diapering.  I've never asked my daycare to swish or rinse my CD's though, and my LO only goes part time when DH and I want to go out for a date.  I guess handling bodily fluids and solids could be considered a health hazard, so I guess I can understand the part refusing to reuse any part of the diaper that has not been washed.

I use gDiapers and BG 4.0's.  When I was talking about it with the owner of my daycare, she said that several other LO's are cloth kids, and that most of them had snap closures, so I've just sent LO to the daycare with the BG's since that is what all the providers were familiar with.

  • yes, the way i read it is you should just need a note from the pediatrician...but just call around to a few just to see what they say!
even if you do have to use sposies at dc, it's still cheaper in the long run to only have to use 4 sposies a day instead of 7 or 8! and the less wear and tear on your dipes, the higher the resale!

Is it a day care center or a home day care? Either way, it's great to know there was no problem. We were planning on doing pockets for the day care stage once we're there. But there isn't exactly a lot of people who cloth diaper in my area. I'm in the Tri-Cities.

  • i told our dc she was sensative to sposies. they didnt ask for a note or anything. i took all velcro pockets or aios. i didnt expect them to unstuff or spray or anything. we take a large planetwise zip wetbag for them.

ps. im in michigan as well

eta,i took her to a center not an in home. they told me the only law was it needs to be contained because of the hazard

In VA, state licensed days requires  all diapers be removed in one piece, so AIOs and pockets (without removing inserts) are pretty much required. Spraying definitely won't be happening here.
