Guinness stout and milk supply

Based on advice from Kellymom website, I've been drinking 1/3 of a bottle of Guinness stout every night for a week (1/3 just because I don't want a lot of alcohol).  I've noticed that my milk supply has increased by maybe 20%?  I'm also taking fenugreek, which I think helps, but I've noticed a difference since adding the beer.  Just thought I'd share.

Re: Guinness stout and milk supply

  • So funny that you posted this today. I have had supply issues since Day 1. I have been on Fenugreek and mother's milk tea and oatmeal and all of the other common tricks. My milk has been even worse this week. We went out for pizza last night, and I ordered a Guinness for the first time in probably 8 years. The reasoning was two-fold ... I wanted a beer and I heard it was good for milk.

  • I choked down a 6 pack of O-Douls (non-alcoholic beer) one week last month with no apparent affect. I hate beer. Last week my step-dad introduced me to a yummy apple cider beer...sweet enough to be drinkable, gonna give beer a go again.

That is what I was going to say. Eww beer. I wouldn't mind the increase in my supply though. So what kind did you find exactly that you can tolerate?

I actually didn't mind blue moon and corona before I got pregnant but now they taste so gross to me for some reason.

I actually have been drinking 1 gatorade a day, which was recommended to me by a friend who had good results with that and I have noticed an increase by drinking this as well. Just thought I would find a beer I like to switch it up every now and then :)

Like was stated above it has to be a dark beer (lots of hops) to be effective so the apple beer was tasty, but not worth it. The O-Douls was specifically recommended for bringing up breastmilk production on a couple sites I visited. I made it 'drinkable' by adding honey to it...but am still no fan. If I come across a tasty dark beer I'll let you know. :)

    I like the Gatorade idea.

I love me some beer. Dark is good and most flavorful. Don't give me any sweet, fruity beer. Missed it so much when I was pregnant. The milk production is just an added perk for me.
