Transitioning to Toddler Bed?

Did you do this yet?

At what age?

How did it go?

Any tips/advice?

My son is 2.5 and he almost fell head first out of the crib the other night. His crib is the type that you just take the front part off and get a rail for it and it turns into a day bed type toddler bed. I am planning on making the swith this weekend. Any thoughts, comments, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated!!

At what age?Just after he turned 2, then moved him to a full sized bed at just after 3.

How did it go?Fine. He wandered a lot at first, and still wanders a bit, but it went pretty smoothly.

Any tips/advice?IME a bedtime routine/stories are even more important to get them to settle down and KNOW it's time for bed. Also, be ready for lots of wandering initially. DS loved the novelty of being able to hop out of bed.

  • DD had just turned 3 when we transitioned her to her toddler bed.   We had gone on vacation and she slept in a full size bed, so the transition wasn't too hard.   I told her that she's not allowed to get out of her bed, so she's never gotten out, which is good.  That was one of my worries.     She got to pick out the bedding she wanted and that helped too, made the bed more exciting to get into every day

  • We did this last weekend. He's a little over 2.5 yrs old. We just took off the front panel of his crib (so it's a toddler daybed) and he's been great with it. He'll get out of bed and wander around his room a little bit, but he hasn't ventured out of it (yet). He doesn't wander for very long and always climbs back into bed after a little bit to sleep.

We moved DS to a queen size 2 weeks ago. He actually made the decision that he wanted to start sleeping in his big boy bed, it's in a different room. I just kept telling him that it was his big boy bed. He was very excited to make the switch. We just brought all his blankets & animals over to the new bed. We pretty much stuck to the exact same routine as before.
  • We moved DS a few months before he turned 3. He hadn't tried climbing or anything but we wanted to get him acclimated to the bed before DS2 came and we eventually needed the crib. He did great. STTN since night 1 and never even gets out of bed (even in the morning he waits for us to get him). It was sort of surprising, but I'm not going to complain! We didn't really do anything special - just followed the standard bedtime routine. I'm sure we're just lucky. :)

I'm wondering the same thing. Our son is turning 2 next week.  He loves his crib and although he is able to get out, he never does unless we are in the room.  We are probably going for number 2 this summer so we just want to transition him to a full size bed and set the crib up in the other room.

We transitioned our daughter when she was almost 22 months old. At first, she kept running out of her bed and opening her door and crying (we have a baby gate up though since we thought that would be happening) and we'd just tell her to get back in bed but made no production out of it so that she wouldn't use it as an excuse to squeeze more awake time out of us. That lasted about a week. Then she'd just open her door and fall asleep on the floor next to the door and we'd put her back in bed once she was asleep (if we did it while she was awake, she'd just get right back up). She'd get up and grab things from around the room and sleep with them on the floor. I did some googling and apparently that's a pretty common occurrence in the whole bed transitioning process so we didn't worry too much. In hindsight, we transitioned her a bit too early but after about a month and a half, she now runs right to her bed, loves it and doesn't even get out of bed in the mornings until we come and get her around 7:30/8 and even then, she's just hanging out w/her stuffed animals and singing. Best of luck to you!
