Jogging during first trimester

I'll be 12 weeks tomorrow and am trying to stay in shape. I've been trying to run outside but I feel like I have to pee all the time, like there is constant pressure even if my bladder is empty. It only happens when I'm jogging.  Has this happened to anyone else? Does it get better? It's such a quick way to get exercise without having to drive to the gym; I'd hate to give it up, but it's sort of miserable!

Re: Jogging during first trimester

  • It gets better, I am 33 weeks and running in a 10km race tomorrow. Your pelvic floor muscles (or whatever they are) will be sore well into your 2nd trimester. If you can keep with it though, and walk when you have to it should get better. Do kegel's regularly and that should help as well. There were a few times that I would squat behind a tree only to have a trinkle come out. I have been able to run about 4-5miles a day the entire time, and I feel so good and so strong. I also enjoy the smiles and occasional shocked faces I get when I am out for a jog.

I started experiencing the constant urge around 12 weeks as well.  I have some days where I don't feel like I have to pee at all during my runs, and other days where I have the urge to pee every 2 minutes.  It probably depends on where the baby is sitting.  I have stuck with it so far though, and am 28 weeks running between 18-25 miles per week.  Some days I only make it about 3 miles and other days I make it up to 6-7.  Sometimes, i've noticed that if I hold the pee instead of stopping and going, the urge goes away after about 5 minutes.  It's an uncomfortable 5 minutes, but it's better than looking for a store every 2 blocks to make a pit stop in.  Try to keep it up, but listen to your body.  Good luck!
  • I ran a 5K a couple days after I found out I was pregnant.  I was able to run for most of my first trimester, but had to give it up.  My health started to decline and by 23 weeks I was off work. I had wanted to run my entire pregnancy and was really disappointed.  I've been slow at getting back at it. But I'm going to run the same 5K I'd ran last June (right after I found out I was pregnant).

  • I think maybe you have to get used to it and try not to make a habit of stopping to go. Or maybe the feeling does go away later. I remember during 2nd tri I could barely go 1.5 miles without having to stop to pee but now I can do 5 miles fine. I also try not to drink water right before running. I usually drink at least one big glass of water when I wake up in the morning to pee! around 5 a.m., but then go back to sleep and don't run until about 7.

  • It gets better for a while and then will get worse again when baby is engaged late in 3rd tri. I remember early on feeling like I had to pee constantly while running, but nothing ever came out. I'm still running now, and I can make it a good 3 miles before I have to stop and pee.

I don't remember it getting better during the pregnancy, but I found this to work fairly well for me.  That and planning running routes around known places I could stop and use a bathroom if needs be.
