A week- Not Eating!

First let me say, I am waiting for a call back from the pedi.  My daughter has been sick since last Saturday. It started with wicked stomach virus- vomiting then diarrhea.  She has also had a croup-like cough which the pedi said is also likely viral.  So we have been nursing her and getting her to drink as much as possible, which is not a lot.  The diarrhea has lessened to once or twice a day, the cough is still pretty bad. She's been to the pedi earlier this week and they basically instructed us to keep up fluids as much as possible and watch her. The also gave her a cough medicine (very small dosage) because she hadn't slept in 3 days. So, here we are a week later and my baby still will not eat.  She's eaten a couple oranges (not ideal, I realize), a couple rice cakes and some Cheerios and ice pops since Sat. She is having wet diapers- like  2 or 3 a day.  I am very worried.  How long can a child go without eating?  Has anyone had a similar experience?

It took a good week once he was over the stomach bug to regain appetite. So, in essence, he hardly ate the week he was sick, then gradually started eating more the next week.

  • Agree, fluids are most important. Our pedi even said milk is ok even when sick. I thought that was strange but at least it's some calories. My 2 year old had this insane flu, cold, bronchitis thing last year for almost a month! She didn't eat for about 2 weeks, and it took some time to get her eating normally.
