Pregnant after 35

Anyone use support socks & did they help?

My feet have swelled up over the past 4 days and the swelling does go down completely at night. It has been in the 90s and I think that is part of it.

Has anyone had success reducing edema by using support socks? How about cold baths?

My hands and face are completely normal. So I do not think it is preeclampsia.

Yes, my first 2 kids were August and Sept. babies and I had terrible swelling with the heat.  I got a prescription for them from my OB and got fitted at the hospital.  They were covered by insurance.  One pair looks like old school basketball socks and the other like thick old lady hose.  But they worked.  By the time I got them with my first, I had had swelling for a few weeks and it persisted.  With my second, I started wearing them each night at the beginning of the 2nd tri, and more in the 3rd tri.  I didn't have any swelling with that pregnancy because of that.

Also take them to the hospital and wear them after delivery.  It helped post partum swelling too.

I used support socks with my first and they help a lot.  You can also buy them from travel specialty stores if you want some cute designs.

  • I had swelling on top my left foot and ice pack helped.
  • I have been wearing compression socks from the minute I wake up/get out of the shower until I go to bed since about week 16. I wouldn't be able to survive without them-- especially not at work (I work 12 hour shifts, pretty much on my feet the whole time).

I have some nicer/less medical looking socks that I bought from TravelSmith (online). They are a lifesaver...

  • I'm a nurse and we all wear support socks all the time for work. Prevents varicose veins and swelling. You better believe I'm stocking up on different styles now that I'm expecting.

I'm a nurse, too-- and I upped the level of compression and am THRILLED about it. Especially since you get even hotter once the "incubator effect" kicks in; the TEDS style stockings are nasty when you get hot and they don't have as much compression as some of the other socks out there.

  • Thanks ladies,

I have an OB appointment today and I am going to ask about the support hose!
