My friend suggested to keep the plastic wrap that the mattress came in on and to not use a mattress cover protector. Is this legit advice?? I can't find any safety guidelines in regards to leaving that plastic on, anyone else have done this?
Waterproof mattress covers are so inexpensive and they have a plush element to them. If you keep the plastic on I would think it would feel a bit crinkly under the sheet. Plus when the kid pees/pukes through the sheet it's nice to just throw the mattress cover in the washer. If you left the plastic on you would have to try to wipe it down and sanitize it which seems like much more of a hassle and probably less sanitary.

I wouldn't do that, I would get a regular waterproof mattress cover. I've always heard that you want to take a mattress out of the plastic and air it out for a few days, so it would seem counterproductive to leave the plastic on, plus probably cumbersome to fit sheets around, etc.

That would make so much noise every time you set baby down or they moved. Not to mention, the plastic gets so dirty from being in a warehouse and delivered, I wouldn't want my kid sleeping on that even with a sheet over it.
I think there are a few more serious issues not being considered here. For example, when you buy a crib mattress the ones with the vinyl covers aren't recommended because they don't breath very well....plastic won't breath at all. And then you have to consider things like 'off gassing' and the potential for SIDS. The materials used in mattresses at least have to reach certain standards to be deemed safe. They don't test the plastic it comes wrapped in and usually it tells you right in the packaging to dispose of it. The dirt on the plastic and amount of noise would personally be one of my least concerns.

Gross. Mattress pads absorb and protect....I'd never just use plastic.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929
Ew. Was my first thought lol. Both crib mattresses I've purchased were filthy. I mean the plastic, of course. It was disgusting, leaving my hands dusty and gross. I would never leave it on. Plus there is a lot of excess and I don't think that would be comfy either. A mattress cover is only 15 dollars, I think it's worth it.

This. After reading the responses I was legitimately wondering when someone was going to bring these points to everyone's attention. Why on earth would anyone let their baby sleep on a plastic bag?!?!?
Yeah, my instincts were to take it off and not listen to her. This is my firstobviously and all of your points definitely drove that home! She kept it on for her baby and touts how clean the mattress still is, it definitely seems extremely gross to me now and not worthy of doing!!
Re: Crib mattress cover
This.
