Trouble TTC

IUIs without meds?

Hi again. Quick question...

Is it required to take meds while you're doing IUIs? I ovulate just fine on my own. My issue is more "structural." My doctor says I'm definitely "cooking," meaning I ovulate regularly, on time, and all my hormone levels looks good.

Has anyone tried this or heard of doing it without meds?

Re: IUIs without meds?

  • I ovulate on my own, and even without meds I will sometimes have two follicles. After a couples unmedicated cycles turned TI because I was only ovulating on my left side, we did meds because my left side is blocked and we wanted to stim both sides (which didn't work because I would just get 4 follies on my left anyways). If it wasn't for the blocked tube we would not have done meds. Even without meds, my doctor still monitored for size and number of follies as well as cysts before IUI.

So it is not unheard of. Everyone is different. I'd talk to your doctor again and do what is best for you.

  • Thanks! I was just curious. I'm not blocked or anything. Everything's working just fine! The sperm just can't make it past my cervix, so I'm just hoping 2-3 cycles of IUI will do the trick and give his soldiers a leg up!

  • I'm doing iui's and all I use is the ovidrel shot otherwise I'm unmedicated. I ovulate on my own as well, and I do the shot just to make sure I ovulate in accordance with the iui. I'm also structural issues :
  • I've heard of some doing this. At the very least I would want to do a trigger shot to make sure that ovulation time lined up ideally with IUI. I don't know what kind of insurance coverage you have but personally I think I'd want to try at least oral meds to up my odds/ give the sperm more targets.

  • My RE asks me each cycle what my patience level is and we base our steps on that.

Non-medicated IUI might be worth it. I'd definitely ask the RE and don't make a decision you're not comfortable with.

  • We are doing an unmedicated IUI this cycle due to cysts. I also ovulate just fine on my own, but have previously done 2 medicated IUIs in an attempt to improve our chances. Needless to say, it didn't work, so now I am hoping that being off meds will produce one really good quality egg and it will work. Good luck to you! I know it is tough to weigh all the options. :
