Can you drink water before c section.

Just wondering if I am allowed to drink water before a c section. I am going in for a non stress test tomorrow. But my doctor said be prepared for a c section just in case. She said don't eat or drink anything after midnight. Does this include water?

that includes water. i was in the hospital for 6.5 hrs before my c-section and i wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything, including water.

Yes, drink water. if you're dehydrated your veins will shrink making it really hard for the iv.

They say no food and drink before in case they need to do general anesethia because the food can make the absorption of the drugs different (something like that).

I work in L&D and no, you can't drink water. Anything in your stomach increases your risk of aspiration if something goes wrong and they need to intubate you. It does make starting IV's harder because you're dehydrated, but most pregnant women have better veins than the average person (not always, but usually). GL!

My C-section is scheduled for 2pm. My doctor said I could have some ice chips at 6am, but nothing after that.

Apparently I am the only one that laughed when they said that and took my chances with aspiration. I had a small cup of water at 6 am, my surgery was scheduled for 12:30 pm, and another at 11 am when they told me I was being bumped for an emergency. It was hard enough going 20 hrs without food since I last ate at 10 pm and didn't eat again until 8pm the next day. If you call jello eating.

But yes when they tell you no food or drink they mean everything.

No water. It'll be hard but you'll feel better after the IV internally hydrates you (if you are getting the CS).

If it makes you feel better it could very well be the last precaution you have to take during the pregnancy.

Nope, nothing at all. The night prior to my c-section I was kept completely NPO (nothing by mouth).

No, it doesn't have anything to do with the absorption of the drugs, it's has to do with aspiration during surgery. You can eat some ice chips to keep your mouth moist but no to drinking.

I was told no water 8 hours prior to my c section.

I'm going in at 8 am on monday and my dr. said absolutely nothing after midnight! Not even chewing gum. If your mouth gets dry, you can swish and spit, but that's it. Don't take any chances that could cause complications. Good luck!
