XP: flat spot

Repost from Feb 2013.
DD is 2 months old. Since birth I noticed her head wasn't quote, perfectly round. And her sift spot on the back of the head always felt kind of bumpy. I tend to be a paranoid googler and anytime I'd mention it, family just told me to relax. Well I asked the pedi about it and she said it seems like her growth plates are overlapping a bit and that she favors one side and is developing a flat spot. Pedi noticed her ears are a little asymmetrical. Anyone have any experience with PT, stretches, tips not to get baby to favor one side, cranial helmets, etc?

  • I have noticed LO favors one side but I'm not sure why. I just try to move his head to the other side when I'm feeding or playing with him. I am very conscience about it because at a birthday party a few weeks ago, there was an one year old boy with a very flat head. The whole back of his head was flat. I know some people say not to worry too much but after seeing that little boy I am watching very closely to make sure DS is not in the same situation in a year.

I just got the noggin this week for the same reason. So far I like it! I'm not too worried at this point, for us I think it will start correcting itself when he can roll and sit up and isn't laying on his back as often. Our pedi didn't seem too concerned either, she said to try to turn his head the other direction when he's asleep and feed him more on the other side. The stretches she told me about are to turn his head completely to the side then the other. Also with his head facing forward, tilt his ear to his shoulder and the same the other way.

I haven't done that much because she said that was more to see if he was favoring one side due to the neck muscles not being developed, but he definitely turns his head on his own in both directions. I'm just using the noggin in his swing/bouncer/car seat and doing more tummy time too. I'm not going to wake up all night long turning his head so I'm doing a lot during the day.
