Flat spot

DD is 2 months old. Since birth I noticed her head wasn't quote, perfectly round. And her sift spot on the back of the head always felt kind of bumpy. I tend to be a paranoid googler and anytime I'd mention it, family just told me to relax. Well I asked the pedi about it and she said it seems like her growth plates are overlapping a bit and that she favors one side and is developing a flat spot. Pedi noticed her ears are a little asymmetrical. Anyone have any experience with PT, stretches, tips not to get baby to favor one side, cranial helmets, etc?

Re: Flat spot

  • Does she tilt her head to one side? It would be most noticable when she's in a bouncer, swing, or RnP. My DD has torticollis, and has all of the symptoms you are presenting. It's correctable with PT if that is what's going on.

My son was born pretty crooked. His skull bones overlapped and one ear is more forward than the other. He also has some torticollis and a small flat spot on the right/back of his head. Our pedi sent us to PT and now we do tummy time with every awake period, we move his head in his sleep to have him face the side he avoids, and we do neck stretches with every diaper change.

We've been doing it for a little over a week and already notice a slight difference. No one has mentioned to us a need for a helmet at this point.

My DS has a bit of a flat spot and the Pedi told us to roll us a blanket and put under his shoulder (so he will lay on the other side) a few nights a week. He favored one side (pedi said it could be how I was BFing him). Ours was not a "big" problem and the flat spot is going away and he is naturally (without the blanket) sleeping with his head both ways now. Good luck!

  • Also heard to alternate the direction you put them in the crib, if there crib is against a wall. They will naturally want to look out, not at the wall. And I've been alternating the way I hold her. So she has to turn the other way to look at me, and she will be resting the other side of her head on my arm.
