Question about Shriners intake process

My DD may need orthotics. We saw one PT who says she needs them, but our pedi disagrees. I want another opinion and asked our pedi to give us a referral to a nearby children's hospital. She accidentally sent the referral to Shriners Hospital. I hadn't really considered going to Shriners because I felt like my DD's case wasn't that severe and I'd heard they are strict in who they accept as patients. I went through with the referral on the off chance that they might take her case. They reviewed the referral and gave her the go ahead to get an appointment. She is scheduled for June.

So what happens next? Is she officially in? At the first appointment will they take a look at her and decide if they'll treat her? Just wondering if it's ok to go ahead and get my hopes up that she will be treated at a world class Shriner's facility yay! or if we still have some hoops to jump through.

Anyone else have a child treated for orthopedics at Shriners? What is the process like? TIA!

Re: Question about Shriners intake process

  • My daughter's PT said she needed orthotics, our pedi didn't really agree or disagree, but our insurance wouldn't cover them so we applied to Shriners. It was a 4 years ago, but we received a pretty detailed agenda before her first appointment which included a slot in their on-site orthotics department. I think it was 4 appointments - NP, Ortho, PT and orthotics. They were pretty thorough and decided to hold off on the orthotics and continue PT and monitor, and we had follow up appointments with them every 6 months for two years.
