Operation:Deswaddle= fail

DS is 4mo and sleeps at night swaddled with 1arm out as we are beginning to transition out of the swaddle. My problem is napping (which half the time is a disaster). He frequently has to be completely swaddled to get a decent nap. Do any of your LO's still need to be swaddled for nap, but not night time? And if you have successfully deswaddled, can you offer help? TIA!

  • Mine still is swaddled at naps. I am not too concerned though.

  • DS is 4 months and still swaddled for naps and night time... dreading the transition!
  • We went cold turkey on the swaddle for naps and bedtime.  Took a few days before he learned to settle his arms down, but now he sleeps really well during naps and bedtime.

She is still swaddled for night time and we just started day time swaddling because she will not nap if I don't...

  • I tried a number of times to get DD out of the swaddle because she was breaking out no matter what way I swaddled her and it just wasn't working until one day it simply did. I would just keep trying every few days to leave him unswaddled but let him sleep comfortably in between
  • We left one arm out for naps, and have done two nights of one arm out now. Today he napped with both arms out, so I am going to increase naps with both arms out as the days go by and lead up to night time with it.

If it makes any difference, his naps are pure crap too. His night time is the only time he seems to get any decent sleep, so sleep training a deswaddle for naps is pretty difficult.

  • I could have written this post word for word! I don't any advice, except to just keep with it I guess - that's what we're doing! I've tried many times to put DD down without the swaddle, but she's such a spaz she can't relax and I end up caving every time and wrapping her. A few minutes later, her whole body relaxes and she's out. I'd totally leave her swaddled, but now that she can roll over, she does so the second she wakes and gets herself stuck.

I stopped swaddling a few weeks ago and it was an utter failure.  DS still startles himself awake often and would only sleep 1 2-hour stretch at night and was up every 20-45 minutes after that first stretch, it was awful.  After about 3 weeks of no sleep I splurged and got a Magic Merlin Sleep Suit.  It has helped a lot.  He's still not back to STTN but he's much closer and sleeps for longer stretches now.  That and he's so stinking cute in his little marshmallow suit.

  • I never swaddled for naps, only at night.  It was part of our bedtime routine.  However, we stopped swaddling when V totally broke out of it.  She started with getting an arm out every once in a while and getting the entire swaddler completly turned around backward, to every night, then to (somehow) totally taking the Velcro apart.  When that happened we just stopped.
  • I bought my baby a sleep sack from ZipadeeZip to wean him from being swaddled because his daycare does not allow it. Plus, I don't have to worry about him when he starts rolling over.
