Multiples

Come on...Really?

How weird is this... A girl w/ two boys, 2 years apart, said my boys are twins also. I asked how? She said, i kept the other one frozen so i could deal with only one at a time....

Im guessing she had multiple eggs fertilized at the same time and froze the ones she didnt use. Then 2yrs later used one. Come on...really!?!?

  • People are crazy.  I believe the common definition of ?twin? is to ?be born at the same birth?. Unless she had a 2 year long birth, she does not have twins. J  hahaha.

  • Yea, twin means two born to the same birth. By her definition, I have quintuplets with two on board and three frosties.

  • So silly.
fraternal twin boys born january 2009
  • I get what she's saying in a way, the comparison to fraternals etc., it's actually how my RE explained it to us the very first time. However, it's a little nuts to tell people your children are twins.

  • I just saw the "deal with one at a time" sorry, I think that means not twins lol.

Twins/other multiples (to me) =  same birth

  • So for those of you who say twins means born at the same time; what about delayed interval delivery? As in the story posted recently with an 87 day interval, are they not twins?

Maybe a better definition would be gestated at the same time?

But no, I wouldn't call the example twins.

I think babies sharing a uterus at the SAME time are twins regardless of delivery date :

  • Although,my above definition doesn't account for the extremely rare but documented cases of a lady who ovulates twice in a cycle and has two children fathered by different men. Half siblings sharing the same womb at the same time, twins?

    This obviously intrigues me.
  • Um, by that definition, my girls have a twin brother & sister who are 1.5 years older and being raised by another family...

(we were recipients of embryo donation)

And since we're working with the donors to find another family, we could have quints (or more) raised by 3 diferent families...blows your mind! ;-)

I think I'd call that twins. In my mind it has to do with sharing a pregnancy/ womb, even if they don't end up sharing a birthday.

It is an interesting notion that with IVF children conceived on the same day can be born years apart, but I wouldn't call them twins. What a weirdo, I wonder if she was trying to make a joke?

Or how about babies concieved at different times but the mother has 2 uteruses and has a pregnancy in both but the babies are different gestational ages? Twins? There was a story on the news about this scenario some time ago.

Oh, interesting one. I think if the GA was significantly different I'd be inclined think of them as not twins at all.
