Pregnant after 35

CVS timing question

For those of you who opted for the CVS:  What week in your pregnancy did you have it done and how long did it take to get the results?

I just called to set up my first pre-natal appointment and the Dr won't see me until 10 wks.  I'm just trying to figure out if I should push to be seen earlier so I can get the referral to MFM in time.  I swear with my last pregnancy, she saw me around 8 wks.

I am sorry I can't help with what happens after the CVS and wait time for results because I didn't do it with my 1st pregnancy and won't be doing it for this one either but I know the CVS is generally done  between 11 and 12 weeks of pregnancy, although some testing centers will do it as late as 13 weeks, 6 days

Hope that at least helps in making your appointment.  Congrats and good luck!!!

  • My understanding is that a CVS can not be done earlier than 10 weeks due to the babies limbs not completely forming.  My genetics counselor confirmed that years ago, when the test was fairly new that when the procedure was done earlier than 10 weeks there was a high chance of limb abnormalitites.  Beware of online posts from nonpregnancy sites that talk about this~it's not accurate.

I had my procedure last week, at 10 weeks & 6 days and had to have it done via the abdomen.  I had the results FISHED to see how the 13,18 and 21 chromosomes looked as well as the sex gene.  I found out the next day that all was good and that I'm having a boy.  I'd recommend this screening only after a genetics counseling session, it truly eased my concerns about bein a mom over 35.  The reality is, we have a phenominal rate of delivering happy and fully developed babies.  The stats show that rate of healthy delovery only goes down dramatically at age 45.

    Hope this helps you! Best!
