Talk to me about sleep training

I'm not starting yet, but I would like some opinions on what worked best for you and why. Also any books that you read that really helped. I'm not totally against CIO but I have issues listening to DS cry so that may not work for us.

Please no comments about how sleep training is horrible. I respect your opinion and would never try to change your mind, please don't try to change mine. TIA!!!

  • Ferber.

I'm not going to start until she's another month or so older though.  She used to go to bed so easily, but now its a battle.  I'm not sure if its a rough patch, so it might get better on its own.  Naps kind of get better on their own, so I don't know if I'll use Ferber for them or not, but for those I'm waiting until 6-7 months.

  • Ferber.  The book is excellent; it has so much more information than just sleep training.

We did Ferber when DS was 4 months, as it was a nightmare getting him to nap during the day.  It worked well for us. DS was still getting up 1-2x/night after we trained him at 4 months.  At 4.5 months, he dropped to 1 MOTN wake up.  At 5 months he started STTN (and still is STTN now at almost 6 months).

I LOVE this website: www.troublesometots.com. There's a lot of information about sleep training on there, and although she talks about CIO, she thinks of it as a last resort, so there's lots of other things to try before you get to that. She's really easy to read, has ingested a lot of what's out there regarding sleep training, so you don't have to read everything yourself, and seems to walk the line between all out attachment parenting and all out CIO.

  • The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems worked for us. DH did PU/PD with DD. It didn't work for me because she just wanted to nurse. We started DS on her method at 2 mos and he's been going to sleep on his own for about 3 weeks. CIO was not an option for DD.

  • I like no cry nap solution and I'm reading no cry sleep solution now. I don't believe in CIO, so I'm happy LO is responding well to the strategies in these books.
