What to wear - onesie, sleeper, swaddle question

I need this explained to me. What are you dressing your LO in if they want to be swaddled all the time? Do they just wear a regular onesie? Or are you putting them in footed pajamas and then swaddling? Not sure I really "get it" yet.

Question is posed both for during the day and night....

Thanks in advance!

Re: What to wear - onesie, sleeper, swaddle question

  • Depends on the temperature of your house. It's in the high 90's here in August, so we tend to kick the a/c pretty high, and it can get cooler than usual.
    Due with #5 April 22, 2015. It's a girl!!!!!

Yes it was planned, yes we know what causes that, no we are not on public assistance, and yes we will be getting cable after this. ;)

  • It will be hot here but we keep our house cool. I am also unsure really, and this is my third! First summer baby. I will be checking back at replies!

  • The temp in our house is normally between 68 and 70. We had DD in long sleeved footed PJ's under the swaddle.

  • DD was born October 1 in New England ? we did onesie, footed sleeper, and light cotton swaddle.

Depending on the weather and DS's gestational age/weight, we might do away with one of the layers, but the 3-layer outfit worked well at warmish room temp (70-72 degrees).

  • Lucas hated to be swaddled. When we were still trying to swaddle him, he's be in a onsie because we kept the house warm.

  • DS was an October baby and I remember us using just a lot of onesies during the day and swaddling at night.

Loving every minute with two sweet boys!

  • Both my other 2 are summer babies and I found if I swaddled them in clothes that were too heavy they sweat badly. I will be putting them in onsies and then swaddling. If you think about it, even with the a/c on, would you be warm in a full sleeper and then bundled like a burrito?

    LOL good point.

We keep the house around 72 during the day. It will be mid 90s during August and September, so warm outside and then cooler inside.

I guess the overall answer is to have some of all of them on hand and then see what works.

Do/did you all register for clothes too? Or do you just assume you're going to get some as gifts?

  • Stupid BUMP!! I typed out my reply and then it disappeared, wtf?!?!

I've read online that babies should generally be wearing an extra layer than us adults inside the house.  We keep our house anywhere between 73 and 78 [I guess it's usually around 76].  We'll probably do a long sleeve onesie and a lighter swaddle.

Overheating is a SIDS risk, so I definitely want to avoid that.  We'll probably pay off his queues.  I'm sure he'll get fussy if he's too cold and we'll just learn as we go along...

The lady at BRU told us to avoid registering for clothes because they're hard to find when people come into the store and look off your registry.  I figure most people like to include a cute outfit in their gifts so you'll get a lot of clothes whether you registered for them or not.

We're lucky and got a TON of hand me downs from my friend (her little guy just turned 1).  I think most people will buy you "cute" clothes so you may just need to buy some simple onsies for everyday/at home use.

  • DS was a summer baby (June 1) and he wore a shortsleeved onesie and a swaddle 24/7 for the first 2 months. We didn't go outside too much because it was 100 degrees and I was afraid to put him in the hot car unless I had to. I was always afraid of overheating him, but he never seemed to be cold, so onesies worked for us.

  • Yep. Onesie, swaddle, sleep not need in Northern CA summer.

With DD1 we sometimes just went with a swaddle.

  • It will be about 100 degrees here once baby girl is here and I will keep her in either a onsie or baby t-shirt when she is swaddled.... most likely at night.

  • DS was born early January and I live in NY, he was swaddled unless bathing or getting his diaper changed. It kept him sleeping and silent or the first two months. I kept him in socks and a onesie and double swaddled, it's what the hospital did and it kept him from breaking out. I don't know if I will be able to double swaddle since this one is do in August.

  • We swaddled DS for sleeping.  He was winter baby though.  We have air conditioning so my plan is probably a onesie and the swaddle.  But we'll see if #2 even likes to be swaddled and then determine how many layers he needs.  I bought some light-weight summer swaddles.

  • We were told to plan on putting LO in one more layer than you have one and that a room temp of 68-72 is best for babies.  I figure our LO will spend most days in just onesies and a blanket if needed and either swaddled or sleep sack at night.  It really depends on your baby.  I say try it out a few ways and see what seems to work for you/them.

  • I'm with HALO and I'm also a mom and a HALO SleepSack wearable blanket user.  My first LO was born in late march and my 2nd in mid-Feb, so for the duration of being swaddled (first 3-4 months), they slept in a footed sleeper, onsie, and Halo SleepSack Swaddle.  We switched to cotton swaddles at the end and sometimes adjusted the layers depending on the house temperature.  It's important that your infant doesn't overheat while sleeping. Keep your nursery between 68-72 degrees and adjust the layers your infant is wearing. With this baby due this month, we're probably going to need a couple cotton Halo Sleepsack Swaddles in the newborn size, and likely will dress him in just a onsie underneath.  Here in MN the temp can vary a lot, but we also don't always have the AC on this early.  I would recommend getting a couple cotton SleepSack Swaddles, and then adjusting the layers your little one is wearing underneath.

  • The rule of thumb is to generally have baby in one more layer than you would be wearing for temperature (not including diaper). So if you're wearing tee-shirt and shorts, baby could wear a onesie and light swaddle, or perhaps just a swaddle. If you're wearing pants and a sweater, add a layer to baby.
