swimsuit question--long sleeve vs short sleeve?

Hello,

I know long sleeve is better protection....but will it get too hot?  Is long sleeve necessary?

Thanks!

Re: swimsuit question--long sleeve vs short sleeve?

  • We use short sleeve or regular suits.  We are only out for short periods of time and use tons of sunscreen.  No issues last year and we plan on doing this again this year.  Still up in the air about using a hat though.

  • We do short sleeve and just stay vigilant about using sunscreen. I have really fair skinned kids and so far that's been fine.

  • I had short-sleeved for DS last summer, but they were a little big and the sleeves came to his elbow.

LS shouldn't be too hot -- when we lived in Hawaii, lots of people (including adults) wore long-sleeved. If the child is getting wet, then they should stay cool.

  • We use lots of sunscreen 40 minutes before getting in the pool and limit exposure to the sun while in the pool.  We just use a regular swimsuit, but I won't put my daughter in a two-piece.
  • Last year DS wore a long-sleeve rashguard.  This year I'll probably put him in a short-sleeve rashguard.  It's not hard to lather his arms in sunscreen, but it'd be pretty hard to get his entire back and belly fully covered.

I'm a pretty easy going mom, but sun protection is my "thing".  He also wears a hat and sunglasses whenever he's outside.

  • We did long sleeved rash guards all last year - just as extra sun protection since clothing is a little more sun protection than sunscreen and doesn't need to be reapplied.

Not only did he never seem too hot, but it also helped him stay warmer in cold water (ocean/pool) and afterwards when they get so shivery from being in the water.

Same here.  We lived in FL prior to this year, so the kids spent a lot of time outdoors and we never had a problem.

  • We used long sleeve last summer when DS was 4 months old, I got him a short sleeve rash guard for this summer. I'm pretty good about applying and reapplying sunscreen on him though as I am very fair skinned and burn easily.

  • Our little guy is very fair skinned and we are in CA - we have always had him in long sleeved and long pants (full) sun suit and he doesn't get too hot.  We have the Stingray Kids Stinger suit and it works great.

  • We got a long sleeve swim shirt since dd takes a swim class and sometimes the pool is cold. Thing is a pita to get off when she's wet. I use a two piece outdoors and much prefer it. I think using common sense will be enough sun protection like avoiding peak hours when possible, taking breaks to dry off/reapply sunscreen, etc.

  • Unless we are spending time near the equator, I would have my babe wear a regular/short sleeve. Last year, we made sure to play under the shade, later afternoon or indoor pools.

She's now older to use sunblocks, but we don't plan on staying in the sun for too long.

But long sleeves won't make them hot. :) Happy splash!

We found a suit that's 2 pieces, but it's a short sleeve rashguard, and shorts. It's just made out of swim material. Makes diaper changes really easy, and it's not distasteful, like the baby bikinis are.
