Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Baby not interested in food

Hey ladies

Seeing as how my baby doesnt like to sleep, doesnt want me to leave her etc I dont know why I would have thought that solds would be any easier.  However, she is not interested.  She was 6 months on the 20th of april, I started the intro to rice cereal about a week before just for her to get an idea of the spoon and bowl concept.  I think since we started she has been interested in maybe one meal.

When we sit down for her to eat she just closes her eyes and turns her head.  If I push it she wats the spoon and eventually cries.  I have tried different times of day but that doesnt make a difference, I have also tried breast feeding before and after the cereal.  The only thing she seems to like is pears.

  Any suggestions. Can's BF forerver

  • Since she just started it may take her a little while to get used to it.  It's a totally different concept to them.  If she likes pears then just let her eat pears until she seems like she's doing better at eating.  My LO ate sweet potatoes for weeks!!

  • I wouldn't force the food issue.  She'll eat when she's ready.

That said, keep offering it to her, let her play with it, show her how you eat it (along with smacking your lips, making a "mmmm-mmmm" sound), have her sit with you/DH while you eat your meals.  She'll be interested with time.

My DS tends to have nights where he's just not interested in food.  Other nights, he can't get enough.  Food isn't necessary at this stage, so just follow her cues.  You're doing just fine. :)

  • She's probably not ready. BF or Formula is her primary source of nutrition till at least 1 year, solids are just practice. Try slopping some pures on her high chair tray and giving her some space to play and experiment and be hands on for a few days and after she seems to have fun try giving her a bite. If she's still not interested back off for a week and try again. It's ok if she's not ready. Solids should be fun! They don't need them at this point. When my LO stops opening we mouth or loses interest, her meal is over. It should never ever be forced. GL

All of this!  Your LO shouldn't really be weaned at this time off BM or formula.  My LO only will eat sweet potatoes for now.  I do keep trying others but he closes his mouth or shoves the spoon away at everything else.  So I just quit and try again later or just give him the sweet potatoes again.  It really should not be a huge deal how much solids they are taking in and it should not replace your BM or formula yet.

  • She'll eat when she's ready.  Maybe give her little things to play with in her high chair.  Like spoons, measuring cups, anything plastic.  Also try putting food on her tray to see if she'll play with it.

  • Thanks for the informaiton ladies.  This is helpful.  I have been offering her the rice cereal twice a day and one other puree at least once a day.  At this point I am not at all trying to wean her from breast feeding, so I am guessing she is getting what she needs for the time being.  I guess it will just be a lot of the floor getting fed for awhile and that is ok.
